Hi!
I have a 1 year old male uneutered guinea pig which lunges and bites every time I come close, especially when I clean his cage. I understand this is a territorial behaviour but I would like to know if there are any ways to stop this behaviour or at least minimise it. Any answers?

Hi!

No answers from me but lots of questions...

Is your boy by himself or does he have a guinea pig buddy? How big is his cage? Has he always been like this or is it a recent change? How much are you around the area where he lives?

Welcome to the forum.
Is your boar a single piggy or does he have a companion?
There will be others along who have a better understanding of boar behaviour ( I have sows) but have a read through some of the behaviour threads on the forum which will give you some help.
Please can we see pictures

Hi! Lunging is very often not so much aggression as a very strongly worded defensive 'keep our of my space'.

Please take the time to read these guides here. Use the information to avoid any predatory behaviours and the piggy whispering tips to tell him that you want him to be part of the group you are leading and that you love thim; that should clear up the perceived underlying dominance vacuum that your boy is trying to push as far as he can. Your boy is a teenager and is obviously not keen to have his territory invaded.

Is he an only piggy or does he have company and socialisation with his own kind?

Thanks for the responses
I have a lone piggy unfortunately
His cage is 3x2 c and c
I got him when he was 3 weeks, he wasn’t too agressive but I’m not sure if it was just because he was scared
I am constantly around him and his cage

Guinea pigs are herd animals.
They need a piggy companion - humans are not good enough, no matter how much we love and care for them.
You may want to think about companionship and cage space for your boy.
Have a read of some of the forum threads on housing, behaviour and care to help you
