Hello my first post to the forum!
My little guinea pig Belle who is 4 in May has never had any health problems and the vet says she's in great health. However about 2 weeks ago she started to cry when she did the toilet and arch her back, we also found a little blood in her urine. A trip to the vet said she was in great health except from a urine infection so we were prescribed medicine but sadly hasn't worked and the vet would like to X-Ray for possible bladder stones. I hate to see her in pain but I'm obviously very attached to her and would like to know what happens during the X-Ray and how safe everything is. Any honest information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Hello :)

I am going to move your thread in a moment to Health and illness section as it will get more views there. the forum is divided into sections with headings and we have a special section for health that is monitored

Sorry to hear Belle is poorly :( What Antibiotic has she been on and for how long?

Can I ask your location also?

when it comes to xrays it is best to get them done with a whiff of gas rather than a full anesthetic, as with a light sedation the piggies recover faster.

P.s- This is my first ever pet and already been super upset about the whole situation...

I know it is upsetting.

We have a recommended vet locator here Guinea Pig Vet Locator

I would expect the vet to want to xray if the AB hasn't cleared up the possible UTI. I would ask the vet about the possibility about performing an xray with a whiff of gas. Also ask them if they have experience of bladder stones etc...

Another AB may be worth trying called Septrin as this is quite useful against Urinary Tract infections, maybe worth speaking to the vet to about it also.

Thank you so much for the fast reply! She's been on Baytril and metacarn for about 2 weeks with no improvement. I'm from the UK.

Quick update we took her to the vets today and they wanted to X ray without any sedation and they found a stone the size of a 5p so they wanted to operate and we went through with it and luckily she's awake and op went okay, very happy and we'll collect her later so thank you so much for all the advice :)

Please make sure they give you pain relief to give at home, i would also ask for some emeprid which is a gut stimulant, that will help keep her tummy moving

Please take a read of our post operation guide Tips For Post-operative Care

Sending lots of healing vibes to your piggy

Glad that the operation went well and hope she makes a fast recovery!

Hi everyone it's been about a week since Belles op and it was very difficult seeing her so tired but thankfully she's her hyper little self again we've still got my 2 girls apart from vets orders but everything is going well and done a supervised visit when they got along great. I just wanted people to know if they go through with the op it is a long process as we had to bottle feed Belle and be with her almost 24/7 for the first 2-3 days and she slept in my room both nights until she was less tired etc. So just be prepared for the long recovery but so worth it! :) Thanks again to everyone who commented and helped.
