Herbie seems to have a sticky patch as if he has sat in one of his whoopsies and it has stuck into his fur. I have tried cutting it out but as it is a bit close to his boy bits I am not sure what to do can anyone help me please.

Also i know that this sounds gross but if a picture will help to show what i mean then please let me know.

I'm in the doghouse with Herbie at the moment as he has made it clear that he isnt happy with me

many thanks Sarah

Hi
It sounds as if you have found his sent glands ;D They do get very sticky, a little drop of washing up liquid rub in helps before you give him a shampoo.

I think the best thing to do is lie him on his back in your arm and have a look at his bum :D Boars sometimes get impacted which means their soft poo gets stuck. Have a look online to see some pics of what impaction looks like first. If he looks impacted then yes you may have to squeeze! Otherwise, if he is just a messy boy, you can wash that area gently. Use some swarfega on the grease gland then shampoo and rinse with a small animal shampoo-not a shampoo for any other animal. A site called gorgeousguineas does lovely shampoos especially for guineas. Let us know what you find!

Hi all, thank you for your advice i shall try it but it doesn;t look like impaction i think it might just be where a bit of poop got stuck in his fur (sorry i have no clue where the scent glands are) and he could just do with a bath. apologies now for my next question how do you bathe them?

also if anyone could help me on guinea pig food too that would be good as he seems to have gone off gerty guinea pig food

thanks

Go to the food section and there is a huge list of all the ones we have tried well the piggies anyway lol ;) I use tescos own in the purple bag and they love it I also sometimes use p@h musili ;) On the bathing well there is a thread around here somewhere on how people bath their piggies, I get towels etc by the kitchen sink I get a cup put the soap in and the fill it with a little water I then rub it all over piggy except face just taking little bits from the cup each time until they are lathered then I either rinse under the mixer tap but I make sure its a safe temp, then i wrap in towels and dry and give them a little treat to eat while I do this and then hairdry. Done! well they hate it, but they put up with it lol!
