Last Tuesday I was scrolling threw Kijiji and I found these two

for some reason I had the feeling that I had to get them like they needed a bit of TLC or something. So when I was doing a general health check I found that the ginger with white first pic had 2 mammary tumors and 1 tumor under her front arm. So I made a vet appointment at the only vet that I know will treat rabbits and guinea pig. But I really do not like this vet he treats rabbits and guinea pigs like cats or dogs so if I want to have them remove them he will make me fast her and use same med for cats or dogs that are not supposed to use on small aninals. so I will probably not op for them to be removed because of this so I'm wondering if I should keep or cancel the appointment because of my uncertainties and distrust of this vet.

Absolutely keep the appointment. It could be something else so you need a diagnosis.

Are there any rescues nearby? Perhaps ask them where they take their pigs.

Also, remember that a lot of medication is for more than one species. Metacam for example, is a commonly used guinea pig pain relief but it says cats and dogs on the packaging.

Hi there, I'm not a Health and Illness advisor but one will be along soon I'm sure.
Piggies do not have a gag reflex and cannot vomit. Starving them before an operation is not recommended as they need to constantly keep their guts moving. My vets never starve piggies as this causes problems getting their guts moving after surgery. Are there any exotics vets nearby or a rescue who might recommend one to you?

is there another vet at the same practice, you could get a second opinion from? have you tried asking the vet why he thinks guinea pigs should be starved pre operation? i know when one of mine went in last for a bladder stone removal, the vet said to sign the surgery permission form & read through it as it was a general pets form, she said when it got to the bit that had "no food in (X)hrs prior to surgery" that oh no that doesn't apply to guinea pigs, they should eat right up until surgery & as soon as possible after surgery (i even took in a goody bag of her hay& veggies for afterwards to the amusement of the receptionist ;) as she was staying in for a few hours for observations after initial recovery ).

Guineas digestive systems will go into stasis (shut down) if not continuously eating. Starving them beforehand would probably delay recovery significantly&probably complicate their health problems, i would definitely have another check round to try & find a different vet as i wouldn't want this one operating on any of my pets (especially without further clarification), could you go in for another consultation with a list of questions for him to answer if there are no other vets available to you ( i see you're Canada & vets are a bit few & fart between over there).

good luck on finding someone different & i'm unsure of kijiji but do you mean that you have recently rehomed these gorgeous piggies?x

hmm edit... not sure if @Sarah-sore or @Keiko The Pig have any suggestions for vets i think they are Ontario based, or @Freela & @Asherah are Canada based.xx

A handful of years ago I wonted to get a rabbit fixed but when I talked to the vet at this he was using a anesthesia that was quite dangerous when using it on small animals. There is no rescues where I live just the SPCA but they use all the vets in the city.

there is one other vet in my city but they are not taking any more clients at this time. And kijiji is a online yard sale where you can sell all of you bits and bobs that you do not wont.

yes I rehomed them last Tuesday

Hi, I'm from Ontario too. Have you tried googling Vet Ratingz? I use it to find vets in my area, it's a site that allows you to rate you veterinarian and you get to see other peoples opinions and experiences on the vet's in your area. It's worth a look.

You have two beautiful girls there, sorry to hear the one has some lumps. I would defiantly get her checked out, but I understand it's hard when you don't have a good vet that you trust.

FYI: Kijiji is a Canadian classifieds site, I assume it's similar to the UK's Gumtree or the US's Craigslist.

today was Jelly's vet appointment and I'm trying antibiotic first to see if that it will help. The antibiotic she is on called Novo Trimel and she gets it every 12 hours for 14 days.
