Just opened a bag of Alfalfa King timothy hay and it's really dark green and really soft when it's usually stalky and a lighter green. Has anyone else who feeds Alfalfa King timothy hay come across this. Maybe it's just from a different crop but i'm usually used to timothy hay being stalky and apart from burgess timothy hay I've never come across soft timothy hay.

@Kylie80 I'm not sure if it's related to the weather as the batches of Oxbow available in the UK are currently really soft with not stalks or seed heads.

I bought another bag from the same pet store but in another area of town and this one is stalky like usual. Happy piggies now not that they minded the soft stuff but they love the alfalfa king timothy hay. I recently got a rubbish bag of oxbow timothy hay too, it’s usually nice and green but this stuff was straw coloured but piggies didn’t care. Only I care about hay quality lol the piggies will eat anything.

i have had some really poor Timothy hay from Oxbow recently mainly in the lager bags the 425g ones were fine but the 1.1kg was awful. Switched to the Alfalfa King Timothy hay and the piggies love it. Pleased to here it seemed to be a one off bag @Kylie80

I agree it could be the harvest as Oxbow are doing much softer hay at the mo. I have just ordered it for mine as Tim loves the softer timothy, much less effort in his old age.

Yeah the bad batch of oxbow I got was a 1.1kg bag too. I'm not to sure if I should feed them this bag of soft alfalfa king or not. I'm sure it's fine but i'm a paranoid piggy mum lol.

I love the softer hay on my hands, some of that stalky hay scratches up my hands a little.

The soft stuff will be fine. They have different cuts depending on the weather so it's okay for them to eat. My boys weren't impressed with it at all, so I had to buy some different hay and mix it in.

I think it must be weather related too. I bought a packet of Alfalfa King barley, oat and wheat hay as well which the piggies were not fond of when I first bought them some to try months back but this batch looked really nice and green and turns out it's soft as well and a shorter cut. The girls are loving it probably for the shorter cut as Patchy won't eat long strand hay that isn't timothy hay as it's to much work for her and she's a little rebel (and really really fussy).
