My guinea pig seems to be unwell :( She's quite thin and has lost fur on a patch on her back. She also seems to have an upset stomach and her bottom end is very dirty. She is still eating and seems quite normal otherwise. My other guinea pig is fine. What do you think might be wrong? Thank you so much in advance.

Hi aussiegirl,

How old is she? You mention she feels thin - could you weigh her on a set of kitchen scales to get an accurate idea of her weight? Ideally try to weigh daily for the next few days to see if there is a pattern of weight loss.
When you say she has an upset stomach, do you mean diarrhoea? How long has she had this for? Does she eat plenty of hay?
Are their any other symptoms with the hair loss - does the hair pull out easily when gently tugged, does she scratch a lot?

Given all her symptoms I'd tentatively suspect a fungal problem, however more information is needed and myself and other members will be able to provide more useful ideas once we have a better idea of her problem.

I have to say though, as always, you should also seek the advice of a skilled and experienced vet.

Take her to the vet please - you have a serious problem on your hands that needs sorting quickly!

Make sure that you weigh your guinea pigs regularly at least every two weeks and ill guinea pigs daily.

Hi again, and thanks for the replies.

I'm unsure of her age as the previous owners did not know, but I believe she is at least 3 years old. She has diarhoea, however she does eat lots of grass hay (can't get timothy here). I haven't seen her scratching! She does seem fine otherwise and enjoyed her vegies yesterday.

Thanks for your help :)

We discovered that she hasn't been eating the food we've been giving her very much, so we've switched to another type and she is now much better :) Thanks for your help.

I am glad that she is better again!

Have a good Christmas and a great holiday!
