I took Frosty to the vets friday, he's not been well and it seems it's because he is getting older (6 years), he isn't eating, and when he does he dribbles and cannot control himself and is unable to keep himself clean. He had to have 3 injections to mainly try and get him to eat again. And because he is not eating they have told me to use baby food and give it to him by syringe, he wasn't keen on it at first of course but he has been taking it slowly. If he is no better by the end of today (monday) they have said to take him back tuesday :-(

Has your vet checked the back teeth (molars) thoroughly? It is not unusual that older piggies develop problems with unevenly ground down teeth.

Dribbling and not eating (especially wanting to eat, but not being able chew) is usually a strong indicator of tooth trouble - which is usually down to the molar growing painful spurs either across the tongue or into the sides of the mouth. I don't know any piggy savvy vets in Kent who can do dental work, but perhaps somebody else on here can. Alternatively, you could try to ring up rescues as to the vets who they would recommend.

Please weigh your boy daily. Here are tips for hand feeding, inlcuding quantities etc., make sure that he also gets plenty of fluid and extra vitamin C: http://www.guinealynx.info/teeth.html

yes Wiebke my thoughts too..........toofie problem maybe?
and i thought GPS had lovely thoughts of advice too :)
Piggies when they get older do slow down, if Frosty hasn't been eating well his toofies might have grown over.......... you do need to see a vet or someone who's piggie savvy now
I wish you and little Frosty all the best xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for your posts and very helpful advice, I have sent an email to milhaven. Someone else also mentioned it might be something to do with his teeth and i wondered if it could be painful for him. I will keep you posted on any updates and also what milhaven say. Thanks

I thought i would update you all, took Frosty back to the vets on tuesday. He had got worse and wasn't eating or drinking or not even taking the baby food and laying flat on his side. The vet saw him and said he defiantly did look worse and had a feel around, he looked like he was in pain and came across something around his tummy inside which she said felt like a tumor, and that if they were to operate and due to his age as well some guinea pigs don't make full recoveries if they are hospitalized as it can traumatize them. I then had to make a decision and going by what would be best for him, signing the consent form was the worst bit and after lots of last cuddles and strokes he was put down on tuesday afternoon :'(. Miss him so much, but i do keep thinking at least hes not in pain or suffering anymore and that's what's best, but the house is so quiet now whenever someone gets out a carrier bag or food bag from the fridge. The vets had him down at 6 years and 4 months old - defi a good age for a guinea pig. ♥ R.I.P Frosty ♥
