I recieved this from the rspca
The Society shares your concern for hutches of this size being sold at a pet shop, however under current legislation, there are no restrictions to prevent the sale of such items.

You may wish to contact the following organisation who provide advice to pet shops and promote responsible pet ownership:-

PET CARE TRUST
Bedford Business Centre
170 Mile Road
Bedford
MK42 9TW
Tel: 01234-273 933/01234-273 550 www.petcare.org.uk

Thank you for contacting the Society with your concerns.

Kind regards

So i rang them and spoke to a very friendly lady.Who has taken my address and has said on the next newsletter sent out there will be an article / feature about guinea pigs and making sure hutches if small like this are advertised as temparary and that guinea pigs are social animals which should be given the chance to live in pairs, small groups etc. She is apparently sending me a copy when its released.
I tell you i feel totally deflated, i dont understand how the rspca can look at these measurements and not see how an awful life some guinea pig or god forbid a rabbit would live in this hutch. Gutted :'(

((Hugs)) Lizz, you tried - unfortunately the RSPCA have their hands tied by the current legislation, which sorely needs to be updated.

I get upset when I see unsuitable cages too, some hamster cages I saw recently were shockingly small. I wouldn't buy them, and I just have to hope that others won't buy them either.

Sorry this is no help, just wanted to let you know I'm on your side. :)

Ahhh thats sad - What where the measurements / sizes ?
Any piccies of the hutches ?
I must of missed something ? ::)

There not the only petstore that sell undersized hutches you know. Every single pet shop I have ever come across have tiny hutches cages ect. Its a money making thing you buy a small hutch when you buy your pets then months later when Rabbit/ piggies are fully grown you the owner think mmmmmmmm they look cramped in there. So off you go and buy bigger. Or put another way smaller hutches are cheaper and some people think oh I can offord a pet the housing is cheaper than I thought. Its your money they are after and they will try all sorts to make money.

Not always the case, I have seen people being advised the hutches are too small but they buy them anyway or go somewhere else for one.if the manufacturers were not allowed to make them and If shops were not allowed sell them things would improve.

Damnit there should be restrictions though! Makes me so mad!

At least you tried!

Just been thinking about this, is it me or does anyone else think where there is money to be made the RSPCA don't really do anything about it? I once had the RSPCA around as my dog Monty (now at the bridge) was very skinny and I was accused of not feeding him. The fact was Monty was a very nervous and highly active dog who ate like a horse but because of his high activity he didn't put much weight on. I got Monty from the RSPCA as well which made the situation even more laughable, I was prepared to take on a rescue who was a special needs animal and I got accused of misstreatment. Once I explained all this the RSPCA were great but it just seems that they aren't quick to judge those who make money out of animals.

May have it wrong though.

RECIEVED THIS TODAY...
Dear Ms. Wilcock,

I thought I would drop you a quick line as I leave for holiday today and have not been able to resolve this before I go as the manufacturer has not yet responded to our request to alter the sizes.
If we are unable to improve it significantly we will be replacing it completely. One of my coleagues will be working on this while I am away.

With Regards,
Rob McIntyre

So maybe some good may have been done?!

My god this guy must be so bored in his stuffy office ive just recieved this
Elizabeth,

Thank you for the reply, I suspect that we will struggle to reach 4ft x2x3 ideal measurement as the cost of a hutch this size would be prohibitive I suspect. We find that unfortunately people do not want to spend a great deal of money on hutches as a rule, although there now does seem to be a growing market for very large double level hutches with large runs. We do keep a number of much bigger hutches, some with runs that attach, separate runs, and some really nice products but I'm afriad price is still very much the issue for many people.
Getting the existing one enlarged is not a problem and will be done in the next couple of weeks if it is viable. If it isn't cost effective to enlarge to 3ft or more and keep it at a 'value' price it will be discontinued as we have rabbit hutches that could be used instead. These start at 3ft long and upwards and are deeper and taller too. Having looked at the existing product I couldn't disagree with your comments. It is a product that has been around for many years and not something that has been looked at in this light before.

In the next few weeks you will either see a bigger guinea pig hutch or it will disappear altogether making the entry size 3ft.

With Regards,

Rob McIntyre

Well, that's something at least! I'm kind of stunned you got such a positive reply compared to the usual brush-off standard letter - this is good! O0

I'm going to re email him in a month n see if theres been any change.....he ll think hes got a stalker but where these hutches are concerned i dont really care what he thinks! ;D
