With 24/7 care, my 17 year old and I, we have been keeping him hydrated , fed, maintaining 2.5 lbs.
Found exotic pets vet in ORLANDO FL , 90 min away, with rave reviews! He is meeting MAC thursday am, day 12 and removing his large 5x7mm bladder stone! keeping him 24 hrs and we will will continue 24/7 care to nurse him back! w new low calcium diet!
PRayers on Thursday but we feel good about this and he is a little fighter doing well with all the love and care. It's exhausting and all consuming but all in the name of love.
Met yesterday with head DR of our local zoo, , consult, he added meloxicam for the discomfort w urination and also suggested Children's Pedialyte. We saw major change after a rough 12 hr period when Mac was really fighting the water so he would not have to PEE and he is really doing well with these two things added to pain med and antibiotic. 24 hr care is very hard, I've missed a week of work but I am hoping for a save so all,worth it! thanks for all the support! Holiday really delayed this surgury but we are almost there

A great vet school in Gainesville, Univ of Fla but that's 2.5 hrs, far and esp if multiple trips.
Yes, I will post next wKend once back home w him.

That is great news! All the best. The stone is sizeable, but not too huge. As long as it is still in the bladder and not in the urethra, there should hopefully be no major problems and recovery is hopefully fairly straight forward; the instant relief from pain when the stone is finally out often makes a real difference.
Here are our post-op care tips. Continue to syringe feed and water/pedialyte; we also recommend the use of pedialyte in guinea pigs that are relcutant to drink when off their food. The painkiller/anti-inflammatory is making a real difference.
Tips For Post-operative Care

Our tips for a balanced low calcium diet and long term bladder piggy care:
- please filter the water irrespective of whether you live in a high or low calcium area. Minerals in the water also contribute to the build-up of stones. In our long term experience, water filtering can make a major difference when dealing with a bladder stone or sludge piggy.
- look out for low calcium pellets and/or reduce the intake to one tablespoon per piggy per day
- Please take our sample diet (just the plate once daily without the lettuce) as an example for a balance low calcium diet. Unfortunately most vitamin C and magnesium is present only in higher calcium veg, so for long term health it is not quite as easy as cutting out any calcium without creating deficits in other areas. It is more important to achieve a measured balance.
- the more hay and fresh grass (must be free drom dog or fox pee, as that is poisonours to guinea pigs) you can feed, the better. You can offer both timothy and orchard hay; the second is softer and piggies love to burrow in it.

Long term bladder support:
- vegetarian/vegan glucosamine or a glucosamine based cat food supplement (the UK brand is called cystease, but you can ask your vet for an appropriate US brand or give straight glucosamine) helps to support the natural glucosamine coating of the bladder and urinary tract walls, which have taken a battering from the stone. it is a food supplement and not is not a prescription medication. You can get glucosamine from larger supermarkets or health stores.
- to help heal the bladder, some people swear by barley water. This you make by boiling pearl barley (available frm a supermarket) in a little water for 20-40 minutes. Then drain the gloopy fluid into a dish offer via syringe, as much as piggy will take; they usually like it. Stir in more filtered water if the barley water gets too gloopy for syringing and keep in the fridge. Make a new batch every few days.

All went great, I posted the new on health and illness section
It's all about s great doc! And we found one in Orlando, got that stone out, said we did awesome maintaining Mac w love and hydration, critical for the 12 days til we got in! To see him
He did surgury 2 hrs later and Mac doing fab, weight gain, wheeling, painfree and we are one happy family to have him back!

All he needed was the Meloxacam first 5 days w his antibiotic, post op sat where I'm sure that will be over.
They seal the tiny incision by laser! So no chance of infection.
Convinced it's all about the exotic only vet and I found the BEST! Thanks be to God!
