Update on Alfies abcess

you may remember a couple of months ago Alfie had an abcess under his chin.
Vet lanced it and gave anitbiotics (baytril) which seemed to do the trick- until 2 weeks ago.

Noticed it had come up again so took him straight in. Surgery was decided as best option for next day, but when he arrived at vets it had burst. This made it more difficult to remove it all.

A week later when I took him for his check up abcess had reappeared, so another week of antibiotics.
Today she lanced it again as it had grown from last week despite the baytril, and was slowly tracking up and draining under his bottom front teeth. Vet has concluded that its attached to his jaw bone so more surgery wouldnt work. Sounds like it will become an ongoing problem for him because the antibiotics arent getting rid of it all.

Feeling really down about it. :(
 
I would talk to your vet about using the antibiotic Zith-romax (all one word, it won't let me put it) FurryFriend's vet Simon Maddock uses it at the Cat & Rabbit clinic in Northants, he removed my Daisy's abscess from her leg & she was on a course of it & it was wonderful at clearing any infection.
 
I did mention that there was another antibiotic when I was at vets today but couldnt remember the name. So I think I will ask for it on weds when I go back as its worth a try.

Hes eating well as he hasnt lost any weight (hes a big chunky boy 1250g!), just feel for him as he really squealed today when she flushed it out.

I would definitely go with Zithro-max. A poorly piggy of mine developed an abscess on top of everything else and with this antibiotic, it cleared within days. :)
 
Oh poor little man. Hopefully you can recommend the antibiotic others have suggested and that may do the trick.
 
Went to vets again for a check and it had reduced in size. Asked about the other antibiotic and she said they didnt have it in liquid form but was going to order it.
Have another appointment tomo afternoon and it should be ready to collect.
So fingers crossed this may do the trick. He's well in himself and is getting good at taking his medication. :)
 
I know of a pig on another forum who had a large abcess under his chin and was put on Zithro-max and it really helped, just been left with scar tissue now. Is great that your vet is able to get it in for you.
 
good news!

Alfies abcess and 2 other reoccurances have finally gone. Yay :(|)

Still giving him the zith romax under vets instruction to make totally sure its healed. Seems his body was rejecting the suture from when he had the surgery. This caused a couple of smaller ones to appear. So another week and half of meds and he **** be fine.

Poor wee man he runs for the hills as soon as he sees me coming, hes been prodded and squeezed 3 times a week by "that lady" and i was in bad books for holding him while she did it!

Although its never stopped him romancing the girls every time he comes back from vets lol. ")

Zithro-max is wonderful, all vets should be prepared to use it :) I am so pleased he is doing so well.

I didnt realise till the vet and I had a long chat, that there are very few licensed meds for small furries. But she was happy to order it in for us. And its done the trick.

woohoo.

Its such a lovely day here, off to put them out in their runs. :(|)
