Hi

I just thought I'd let you know how we are getting on with the ringworm (I'm convinced now due to history and patches on ears)

We got treatment in the form of a spray from the vets 6 days ago and I am not happy/confident with it. Shame as it was very expensive :( It is supposed to reach the skin - easier said than done on a long haired pig. Cowslip has got worse rather than better and now has a red raw patch on her face, a patch on her ear and a scabby nose. She is both hating me for treating her, yet desperate for cuddles when I do pick her up :(

She has had a hair cut to help treatment and doesn't look too bad - just a lot smaller! I have been applying that spray to my gloves and rubbing it in but I'm still not sure. I am doing a full cage clean every 48 hours, spot cleaning in between and today I disinfected everything and removed the 2 wood items as if Buttercup is not using her claws then she may be rubbing on them. They have brown paper bags of hay to hide in instead but I must find them something for their teeth. They had been on fleece/towells but I like hay & newspaper much better and I'm sure must be cooler. I wouldn't want fleece on my skin if I had a fungal infection.

Cowlsip has a new patch on her nose. The vet told me not to treat her but the spray leaflet said otherwise so she had been getting the same! Fat lot of use that was....

Today some products turned up from Gorgeous Guineas. Mum was treated with the cocoa Neem melt, shampooed in Neem & Manuka, had Microneem solution applied all over and has had gel on her nose & lotion on her ears. I thought it was worth a try as the vet wouldn't prescribe a shampoo.

Baby had the same apart from the melt due to her age. It has taken ages to dry them out :( I think they will be patted a lot more next time. Poor things just wanted to hide in the towells .

So I am giving it another few days to see an improvement and then need to make some decisions. Cambridge Cavy Trust is about 40 mins away so are an option. I am more than happy to pay the membership and was planning to anyway as it equates a little more than 1 vets visit. My Husband likes this idea. I kind of feel like I would be bothering them though as they must be really busy!

Another option is to get them back to Teresa to be treated. :) Def an option but I kind of don't want to admit defeat just yet :red Plus it is a fair way to go and I'm generally short on time at the sec! Even more so with piggy maintenance!

Third option is to try another vet locally. There is one who has been around for a lot longer who people recommend.

On a plus note they need weighing tomorrow and last week had both gained weight. They eat tons! The children still love them and are desperate to get their hands on them. Oh and I still think they are gorgeous & worth the money & hard work, scabby bits and all! x) I just wish I could cuddle more.

This is a real nuisance for you. Ringworm usually responds quite well to treatment but obviously the right treatment is needed. I know that different vets have their own methods of treating fungal piggies so I'm not knocking your vet.

My vet prescribes grisofulvin tablets - dosage is 1/4 tablet per pig once a day for 10 days - no sprays, creams or bathing is needed although I do bath mine a couple of days after the tablets have finished. I dislove the tablet in about 0.2 ml of water and syringe it in. May be worth asking your vet but dont hold your breath, most vets are extremely unwilling to give this as it is a quite nasty and potentially dangerous drug. Having said that I've never had a problem with any pig I've used it on - and it works!!!

On the plus side ringworm dosen't usually make the pig ill in itself and appetite etc is rarely affected.

Please do remember that I'm very happy to have the girls back here to treat although I know it's quite a long way for you to travel...............

Teresa xx

Thanks Teresa. I'll let you know if I need you. :)

The vets first opinion was that it didn't need treating at all and would clear up on its own until she saw my skin problems on my arms. I'm not sure she would be open to radical treatment. We are supposed to review things tomorrow but I want to leave it at least until friday.

The girls are fed up with all the hassle. Buttercup just wants to get her head hidden under my chin for a cuddle. Cowslip seems less bothered, she is being nosy right now! I suspect Buttercup may be sore though.

Awwwww I hope the girls are feeling better soon.
Vedra is very good, It wouldn't be a wasted journey to take them both to make sure they have the correct diagnosis and the best treatment, plus if you join the CCT, you may find you use Vedra more than your vet as she is such a knowledgeable piggy lady :)
