he is still losing weight and ive now had to start feeding him organic baby food via a syringe which he happily takes but today whilst feeding him i was stroking his back and found a scab and when i had a closer look he seems to have little yellow things on his back that moved oooh. not good got straight back onto vet and have an appointment at ten to five. can any one tell me what they are likely to be they tiny in size and a yellowish clour and they move eek. also can they be pasted to other animals i.e cats or degu's?

i wouldnt just feed him baby food - id give that more for taste as too much may give them diarrhoea. Have you not got any critical care or could you not mash up his pellets and feed him that?

Sounds like lice to me - the vet should give you something to get rid of them. Give his cage a good clean and disinfectant. Usually they get them from direct contact of another guinea pig. It usually states that if its from their bedding or hay it only happens if the bedding has been in contact with a guinea pig with lice.

How much does he weigh?

ETA : are the 'things' on his back right at the bottom of his fur or are they half way up the fur?

hi thanks for reply i took him to the vet last week as he only weigh 885 grams he went up to 965grams over weekend then when he was weighed yesterday he was down to 852grams, i rang my vet and she advised the baby food only vegtables but if he got runny poos to take him straight back. but when i saw the little creatures running around i freaked and rang the vet again they want to look under a microscope to see what they are.
he was on baytril via syringe up until sunday. i dont see how he would have got lice from his flat mate they've lived together since before i had them i do have tow other piggies but they dont live together and the other so no signs of lice stratching etc. i wonder if it could be fleas as we have cats in our house we treated the cats with frontline recently but didnt think to treat the guinea pigs

Wait and see what the vet says with regards to the parasite - are they long? like a worm?
Baytril can on occassions give them an upset tummy so its usually advised to give them a probiotic though some guinea pigs dont change with their eating at all. See if you could get some critical care from the vets and you could feed him that with a little baby food as well.

hi no they dont look like worms they look like little rice sort of shape things if that makes sense small head with a larger oval back part least i think thats what it is they are very small.

been to vets £35.00 pound later he has lice and may be allergic too them that may be what has caused teh weight lose. we were give xenex drops for them and told to give them some drop then shampoo in two days if we want too so ive brought some lice and easy from the gorgeous guinea pig shop. heres hoping we see some improvement
