As you have probably read already Esme has recently been diagnosed with a heart condition and we are starting to get it under control. See my other thread: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?105169-Esme-isn-t-well

We were back at the vets for another check up today and the vet was very pleased with her progress, she said she couldn't hear anything untoward with a stephoscope and she seemed very healthy considering.

Over the past few days we have had several episodes of laboured breathing, with sone pancaking and back leg weakness which was worrying. I had to ring the emergency vet during the week who advised to give another half dose of the furosemide and monitor her which soon started to work. It was very humid and me and the vet feel this humidity was probably the cause of her breathing problems.

I have been given some more furosemide which should keep her going for another 3 months at the same dose, supplementing it with additional half doses up to 3 times a week ( we need to go back sooner if it is more than 3).

I also discussed whether there would be any other drugs if need be, and fortekor and vetmedin she said have had good results in heart pigs they have treated. Does anyone have any experience of either? Obviously it is not certain that we will go down this route just yet.

Also does anyone know/ have experience of whether heart problems can run in related pigs? Tia and Esme are definitely related and Ruby could potential be too as they all came from the same person to the rescue.
I am thinking about getting Ruby and Tia insured if this may be the case.

Gosh what a lot for the poor baby to have. I really hope she does not have anything wrong with her heart.

So hoping you can get this under control for beautiful Esme, she is in great hands with you. Maybe worth speaking to Helen105281 as I know she has experience with heart piggies. Love to beautiful Esme x x

You beat me to it Lee.

Yes I have 7 heart pigs, all are on Benazepril (brand names Fortekor or Nelio) on a range of doses agreed with my vet. Karen who runs the clinic at Vets and Pets in Broxbourne is an expert on heart issues and has put together a wonderful article which I will PM you about. It lists all the medications and recommended doses. I have not used Vetmedin myself but the vet at Vets and Pets has used it for some pigs alongside either Fortekor, Prilenal (Elanapril I think which works slightly differently but is harsher on the kidneys) and it works wonders. Mine also have Frusemide when they are struggling, and yes humid and hot weather can really affect heart pigs, during the recent heatwave our pigs were all fiven Fortekor at higher doses (agreed with our vet.

Am pleased you have a diagnosis now.

Thank you all for your comments I will bear it in mind next time at the vets.

What is a normal weightloss that is to be expected with furosemide, I know the vet said it is normal to have sone loss due to fluid but I just don't know what is normal x
