Aka.. Fudge!

She was back at the vet today for her kidney results as well as another check due to the fact she seemed off for a few days, despite not seemingly having anything physically wrong.

She's had hair loss for 3 months, presumed hormonal but no vet could palpate her ovaries or see them on ultrasound, so it was assumed there was nothing nasty there.

For the past 48 hours she was particularly rumbley with crunchie and seemed to be a bit out of sorts. Fudge is submissive and I have never been able to tell when she's in heat as she never displays hormonal behaviours, so I knew something wasn't right.

Went back to the vet to request a specialist scan as I was worried things would go too far if they didn't diagnose her soon. But we didn't need it.. The vet can now feel her left ovary with a grape sized cyst present.

So she is doing her research on wether the HCG or GnRH will be best for fudge given her health conditions. Due to her heart failure, surgery is not an option as its pretty much positive her heart would stop under anaesthetic.

Her kidney levels have increased, which was inevitable given her adjustment in heart meds, NSAIDs and diuretics, but they aren't at failure levels so we don't need to panic just yet. If they where, I wouldn't be putting her through any treatment as her time would be very limited.

Her heart and fluid levels are stable; which are her biggest problem so keeping positive with that in mind. I have fitted the base of her c&c with orthopaedic foam and topped with the usual puppy pads and thick vet bed which is helping her arthritis. She also weighs an excellent 1030g at the moment; only 20g below her prime weight.

She has fought like a trooper for 15 months, I just pray this doesn't tip her over the edge. We will continue what we've been doing until her injections are at the vets and can be started.

Until then, we will wait.. And hope that the injections work. Any experiences of HCG vs GnRH are very much welcome!

She is grumpy and a little down in the dumps, but I am spoiling her rotten with fresh herbs and berries everyday .. Her favourite.

What a sweet precious little face and what a tough little trooper! No experience with hormones, but I hope you get some guidance. It's amazing how tough these little piggies can be. My vet said that one of my pigs who has overcome a lot of health obstacles has the heart of a lion in the body of a guinea pig, I think the same applies to Fudge!

Her eyes are like saucers... almost too big to be real! She looks like an anime drawing come to life! Adorable!

She amazes me everyday with how resilient and strong she is.. I don't think we give pigs enough credit! Most elderly humans would struggle
With the problems and medications she faces daily x

What an absolute character Fudge is! I love reading her stories,so please keep us updated.

Come on Fudgy, you are doing so well. And so are you Adelle

Fudge has seemed a little uncomfortable today, I called the vet and she's ordered the injections in already so we are off to the vet in a minute for her first injection. We've opted for the HCG ..

Wish us luck!

Ahh how did the gorgeous fudge get on?
My Ellie had a walnut sized ovarian cyst &was about 6yrs old.
She had the hcg injections 2 between 7-10 days apart. She wasn't particularly hormonal, no hairloss just persistent uti's &bleeding.

She had another 2 injections about 12 months later as the lump came back.

The injections caused ellie to be more laid back, she had supersoft hair, the bleeding stopped after maybe 1 more bleed &the lump/cyst shrank considerably, you wouldnt know it was there within weeks.

I dont think there was any connection.I lost Ellie aged 8yrs when the usual vet was reluctant to trial heart meds at my request. &by chance I seen a different vet who could hear she had a heart murmur so trialled them but I think it was just too late for her to be diagnosed.
Nelio I think ellie was on

But the hcg injections were definitely successful for Ellie- although she did squeal like a diva. Tasty nom-noms need to be given at jab times!

C'Mon fudgey u can do it

I hope the injections make a difference Adelle, she is doing so well and is extremely beautiful! X

Thanks everyone. Fudge had her first HCG injection last night. It was given subcut instead of I/M as the vet felt this would be too painful for her, as well as the fact she doesn't have much muscle over her back end due to being so old! If it isn't effective she will consider giving the second injection I/M in 7 days time. She will be checked again on day 21 to decide if she needs a 3rd.

I know these injections are painful, it's a standard needle but the liquid itself is thick and oily and it stings. Fudge squealed when the needle went in but didn't react further so it went well.

The site has had no reaction and the drug itself doesn't seem to have upset her; which was a worry given all her health issues.

She got home and slept for 3 hours in her snuggle tunnel, I dimmed the lights and just left her alone. She got up after bright as a button, had her meds and waited eagerly for a pea flake.

Hopefully they work, but the fact they haven't caused her any harm
Is already a positive.

Praying for the cyst to shrink or even hopefully disappear. Some hair regain would be good too but as this is cosmetic, it isn't an issue. She has the room kept to a stable temperature all day and night with the heating So she is warm enough despite going bald.

Her current hair loss for comparison

Strangely worse on the left, which is the same ovary that's affected. Likely some self barbering been going on too

Awww... I love the pic of Fudge waiting for a pea flake
Really hoping that this course of injections gets rid of that cyst!
Best wishes

Got home from work to find fudges abdomen distended, hard and bigger on the left- the same side as her cyst. Doesn't sound hollow when tapped so I don't think it's bloat.

Doesn't look good, feel sick to
My stomach.

:hug:Thinking of you and sending hugs and very best wishes. Everything crossed for you and Fudgie, she is such a darling.

Fudge went to the vet an hour after I found her with a distended abdomen..

Took her out of her carrier at the vet and the first thing I noticed was her tummy looked smaller! Took her out of her snuggle sack and a mass of poos fell out with her!

She was a little uncomfortable in her tummy and she had a quick conscious X-ray to check but it was just a little gas. She also farted whilst she was there which confirmed it! Her cyst hasn't gotten any bigger which was my main worry.

Some Zantac sorted her out.. And she's been fine since. Think the vibrations of the car journey was probably what shifted it!

£50 because she needed to fart ..:mal:

Hahaha...
but that face looks SO innocent... :inn:
and far too ladylike to actually fart in public!
£50 for a piggie to fart at a vet...
My piggies salute her :tu:
She's a legend!
Bless you Fudge! :luv:

I've just seen this thread Adelle. Sending my love and well wishes to Fudge and yourself. You're both so strong  and what a fantastic vet you must have
