As some (or all) of you may know....this next week could result in a heart wave with extremely high temperatures.

Met office has already issued a heat alert.
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/heat-health/#?tab=heatHealth

Heatstroke, dehydration, sunburn and fly-strike are very real threats to out piggies (indoors or outdoors) over this coming week.

For those of you with piggies kept outside - please ensure they are shaded adequately throughout the day, have enough water and air circulation, and if necessary have access to "cooling" equipment such as cold pods/frozen water bottles etc. Also please ensure their bums are clean and if you have an ill piggie with a urine issue/wet bum or abcess/wound.....then please take them in indoors to reduce the risk of flystrike.

For those of you with indoor piggies, you may need to consider how best to keep your rooms cool.......fans, wet towels/muslin over the windows, the judicious shutting and opening of windows/curtains as the sun moves round......all these can help reduce the environmental stress to your piggies over the next week.

And of course there is a real risk of a thundery breakdown...on thusday and subsequently next weekend..So whilst it may be of relief to us hoomans, please be aware that the weather associated with this current set of conditions can produce some severe wind, flooding and lightning events...including tornados ...and you need to ensure your animals are shleterd, protected and safe.

I will keep this thread updated as the forecast become clearer
x

Update: Wednesday am.
Temperatures set to soar higher today so please be careful.
Met office have issued a warning for NWales/NW/NE and South Scotland
Isolated heavy, and possibly severe thunderstorms are expected to develop late Wednesday afternoon across parts of Northern England and Southern Scotland. Some torrential downpours are possible leading to localised surface water flooding, with hail and frequent lightning also possible hazards.

I will be at work wednesday which looks to be the hotest day so i am already worried. The girls will be in the coolest room, will close the blinds and keep two doors ajar to help let some heat out. I have a playpen already set up outside so that when i come home they can go outside in the shade. I hope i am doing enough.

Mine are outside but I am going to bring them indoors for a few days, although I only work at lunchtime I can't guarantee I will be around to check on them.. At least if they are indoors I know they won't be too hot as we have a nice cool room x

Thanks for posting this. My girls haven't been out today as it's just been too hot. Even in my room with the fan on and cool water bottles they've laid about looking very hot and bothered. Poor things. :soz:

Just wanted to say, for those with piggies in hutches, been extra vigilant! I just looked at the temperatures in my hutches - which are in shade throughout the day - and they are between 28 and 30 degrees!

My pigs aren't in there, of course, but just be aware that even shaded hutches warm up to dangerous temperatures.

Mine are in runs with damp white towels for shade, cool water, ice pods and cool snacks. It's going to be hotter tomorrow so I think I'll need to clear our office and put them in there.
