Hi all!

Came home last night to find my GP Flo feeling unwell (she was fine the day before). Brought her to the vets and she has an URI and I was given antibiotics. She was a rescue piggy and they were unsure of her age - maybe three or four and we have had here for a year and a half. Would her age factor into her ability to fight off the infection? I'm so worried :(

Hi Katblack,

Sorry to hear that Flo is unwell. I'm afraid I don't know enough to answer your question but just wanted to wish you all the best and bump up your thread. Really hope Flo's able to fight it off and recover quickly.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can offer more help. I know your query was very specifically about Flo's age but it might help others to offer further advice and help (if you think you'd like it!) if you give a little more info...eg...What are Flo's symptoms? Is she usually a very healthy pig? Does she still have a good appetite? Which meds did the Vet prescribe, how much and for how long?

All the best x

Hi! I am sorry that Flo is unwell.

Here is a link to more info on URI: http://www.guinealynx.info/uri.html

Please make sure that you give your girl some probiotic after her antibiotics in order to keep the appetite and the guts going and minimise weight loss.

Sorry to hear Flo is unwell, Kat.

Did the vet confirm it was an upper respiratory infection, or did the vet suggest an infection in the chest or lungs? There is a difference; lower respiratory infections (in the lungs; pneumonia) tend to be more serious.

I second Missy's questions; more info will give us a better idea of Flo's condition, and although we can't tell you anything for sure, we may have suggestions that could help Flo's particular issues.

Hi all!

Sadly Flo went off to Rainbow Bridge last night at 11.30pm. When I got home from work she has not eaten a thing so I tried her with some critical care and syringe fed her. I sat with her until 10.30 and then noticed she was bleeding from her genital area. My partner took her to the vet and she extremely poorly, she a six year old guinea pig and is wasn't looking good for her recovery. After a long discussion with the vet we took the tough decision to put her to sleep. The vet said that it looked like she had an underlying illness possibiliy cancer plus the Res infection and a UTI.

I will miss her so much as she was the most adorable guinea pig with a lovely manner.

Thank you for your much needed advice and support xo

Ooops excuse the poor spelling and grammar - it's been a long few days.
