Recently, my guinea pig has been sneezing, I know that that can be a sign of a Upper respiratory infection and so I checked out her nose, it seems to be slightly crusty. Her eyes are not yet crusty though, should I be concerned? My other guinea pig, Melanie is perfectly healthy and is not sneezing or anything, should I be worried? What should I do?

Hi! Which country are you in? could you try to google and ring up vets within your reach?

Most vet clinics in the UK are still running and are trying to help with illness despite strict distancing and protection measures.

Before you can come to any other alternative diagnosis (sensitivity or rarely allergy to pollen, hay dust or an irritant), your vet needs to exclude the possibility of a URI; and that requires an antibiotic. While sneezing is not the most common symptom of URI, bacteria can present if exposure has happened at the pet shop. A URI is not like a viral cold but is a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract more similar (but not related to) our human bronchitis, which can then also descend into the lungs.

If you suspect a URI you should really contact a vet. Piggies do often sneeze if they get hay or dust up their nose, but this is usually an isolated incident without any discharge. URIs can get worse pretty fast, so please call a vet if you can to see if she needs some antibiotics!
