Some of you might have seen on my other posts that we got a new piggy just over a week ago to join our bereaved senior boar Perry who is almost 7 years old. The little sow is called Daisy and was 13 weeks when we got her.

Unfortunately she’s been a bit too sneezy although it settled down but poor Perry also got sneezy, very watery sore eyes and then squeaky breathing so they’ve gone to the vets today and both have an upper respiratory infection :( Daisy isn’t too bad but Perry has some crackling on his chest as well as the other symptoms :(

I feel so guilty that I’ve brought this piggy in and made him poorly. He really wasn’t coping well on his own so we took a risk and went local to get him a friend sooner. He was lonely and Daisy is young so we bonded straight away as they both needed it and she looked healthy.

What a mess :(

Perry is already on metacam but he’s been prescribed an antibiotic and eye drops. His eyes look so sore :( Daisy ‘just’ needs an antibiotic.

I’m so scared for Perry because he’s been through so much the last few months and he’s a senior.

Any advice?

Antibiotic is once a day. Perry’s eye drops are twice a day and he’s already on metacam twice a day.

Oh poor Perry and little Daisy. I hope they both recover quickly. Sending healing vibes ❤️

Some steam in a bowl near the cage might help. Some forages have marshmallow in them and it helps reduce phlegm and mucus when put in the hot water. I hope your piggies get better soon. It sounds like they are very happy together, apart from the nasty bug ❤️

I think Perry’s symptoms might be coming back. He sounded a bit snuffly when eating his breakfast :(

I’m collecting more meds for Perry later. He’s going to have a longer course this time.

I’ve collected Perry’s meds. More antibiotic and eye drops. He will not be pleased later. He really doesn’t like the antibiotic (Quiflor marbofloxacin) and he tolerates the eye drops (Tiacil gentamicin) initially then doesn’t like those either. He’s got ten days of it this time. Poor Perry, I feel bad for him.

Has anyone had these meds before or had an older piggy with a respiratory infection? I’m worried for him.

I think Perry might have a prolapsed penis :(

Going to the out of hours vet now. Poor boy is in the wars lately :(

The vet thinks it’s prolapsed due to age. They don’t think it looks too bad because it’s not red, swollen or infected but they said it’ll stay that way now so we need to keep it clean. I gently cleaned it tonight but it’s clearly very uncomfortable for him so I don’t know what to do :(

I’m scared that he won’t get through all this and worried that Daisy will lose her new Daddy pig when she’s only a baby :(

Did the vet express Perry’s penis to make sure there was no build up at the base? I had a piggy once who was getting over an illness and he hadn’t been keeping himself clean down there. Bless him. I hope he’s ok.

To be honest, I don’t think there’s anything to express. It looks like the whole area is just out and turned inside out almost. The woman we saw was an auxiliary nurse I think and she was on the phone to the vet, sending pictures etc.

Perry is resting a lot and not eating much hay but he’s having his lettuce, cucumber and recovery food pellets (the dual ones)

He’s had his metacam but we missed out his morning eye drops and we are thinking of missing out his antibiotic and eye drops tonight which is not ideal I know but he’s so tender being handled.

Not really sure how to balance everything because he’s also weeing on himself so needs a clean too.

We have an appt booked for Friday but can go sooner. He is still worn out from travelling yesterday so I don’t know what to do.

Ended up taking him in as an emergency because he was breathing heavy and trembling.

There’s just too much going on with him and we have had to say goodbye.

So completely devastated right now and we feel like we contributed to killing him by getting him a new friend the way we did.

We thought he would struggle if Lola ever went first as they were extremely close and he’s gone just 4 weeks after her in the end.

Poor Perry :( and poor Daisy :( They only had 3 weeks together :(

I’m so sorry. You did all you could for Perry and he would thank you for that. He loved his time with Daisy and now he’s reunited with Lola over the bridge. ❤️

Do we put him in the cage so Daisy can see him and know what’s happened? She’s so young. I feel so bad for her. She’s not been acting like she knows he’s poorly so I am worried it will be a shock for her :(

She’s doing ok now. Braved coming out after an hour and half, has had some food and water. She’s a brave little girl.

I’m not brave and sat crying because I just realised I don’t need to give Perry his metacam later :(

I am going to miss him so much. He was such a joy in our lives. Such a lovely boy.

Does anyone know how long upper respiratory infection bacteria(?) last in the environment? Daisy had treatment for 7 days and has been off treatment for 9 days. Obviously Perry continued needing treatment after that.

We have the option of a live alongside friend for her but I am so worried about bringing a new piggy in and exposing them to it and having them both needing treatment.

Also if we rehome her, how long is she a risk to someone else’s pigs for? I don’t want to expose them either but also don’t want her to be alone.

Dropping Perry off at the crematorium place later :(
