noticed this morning, one of the piggies had slightly moist poops and tapered shape at the end. Think I overdosed them on cucumber and lettuce yesterday. Was going to stop all veggies this evening, but wondered if I should just give them a bit of kale and carrot. They are wheeking like crazy things - it's feels a bit mean not to give them anything.

I would stay firm and not give them any veg for the night. Things should be fine again tomorrow. Both lettuce and cucumber are mildly diuretic and cause diarrhea when overindulged.

Thanks really appreciate the advice! I'll hold firm and ignore the wheeking and sad looking eyes. It's tough being a first time piggy mummy!

You can give them some extra pellets instead for once! ;)

Just checked both piggys and typical it's the Peruvian with the upset tummy. Tried to wipe her as she is a bit mucky. She had a couple of goes at nipping me (she's a bit nippy/dominant sometimes) which I ignored and then she made this deep teeth gnashing sound. I put her down at this point - do you think she's going for a proper bite? Shall I just ignore her and persevere?

Give her a hand warm bum bath, just with water.

Here are tips on how to best deal with guinea pig that are nippy in terms that they understand. Make it clear to her that you appreciate that it is not pleasant, but that it has to be done.
" Biting" And What You Can Do

hi,
After advice received from forum I didn't give veggies for evening feed after finding soft poop. The next morning everything looked fine so I gave veg. Afternoon soft poop's again so didn't give veg for two feeds. Poops looked fine so gave veg. Soft poops again. How long should I keep them off veg? I think I'm being over optimistic by putting them back on the veggies too soon. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,
I'm really sorry to hear your guinea pigs aren't well.
I'm new on this forum but have been keeping pet guinea pigs for quite a long time & in my experience guinea pigs can go downhill very suddenly when they're not well.
I wouldn't really delay getting them seen by a vet.
Best wishes to you and your guinea pigs, i hope they get well soon.

As it is not quite a minor one-off, please wait for a full 48 hours after the poos have firmed up. Then introduce veg slowly, starting with a bit of fresh herbs and upping to a small portion of 1-2 veg at the next meal. Reassess after that.

I am merging your thread with your previous one, so we have got all the information on the same case together and can advise you better.

Thanks for everyone's advice and help. A few days ago I also changed hay from oxbow Timothy hay to oxbow meadow hay. Do U think this might have contributed to it as well? Have only just bought the bag, so could do without changing back again right now.

It may have been a factor, but of course all you can do is guess. I have never experienced any problems between switching between varieties of hay, but something has obviously upset their tummies. Perhaps you can buy a small pack of timothy hay and mix the timothy and the meadow hay for the time being and do a gradual switch-over?

2 days without any veg, poops looking better. But still a few strange shaped ones. Feel's
Like I should keep them off veg for another 24 hours. How long can Guinea pigs go without any veg?

Just remembered I moved
Them over full time from their pets at home feed to oxbow young cavy feed. Should I move them back to pets at home again?'bit concerned that oxbow feed is too high in calcium anyway, even though they r young piggies. Would b a bit gutted as have purchased massive bag! There should be an A level in Guinea pig husbandry! At least I got NCT classes with the kids.

I think you have to change their diet gradually. When I changed my guinea pigs diet 1-2yrs ago I had to mix a small amount of the new food in with their old food and keep doing that while slowly reducing the amount of their old food and increasing the amount of their new food. They weren't keen on the new food at first but slowly started to accept it over the course of several weeks. I wouldn't be keen on changing their diet again unless I really had to, my experience was that they're not that keen on change.

I love their photo, they look gorgeous ☺ Hope they get better soon

Still a few mutant shaped poops e.g. About 10%. Can I still keep them off veg? Leaving piggies with the OH for the next two days. Just writing the 'things to do' list for him:bye:

Personally i would, it feels cruel but its best not to start again too soon incase things decline again.

You'll probably find the pellet changed has caused the upset, it should settle down and once it does, shouldnt be a recurring issue x
