I have 4 boars that live in 2 pairs. My oldest are 6 years old called Jamie and Sparky. Sadly I hsve been ill and out of actions for the last 4 weeks so my other half has been taking care of the piggies which me not seeing them has made this situation feel way worse. This morning my partner observed Jamie not eating along with extreme lethargy. I am now recovered from illness fully so went to see my boy and observed dull, lifeless eyes, extreme lethargy, discharge from nose and eyes, not eating or drinking and over 300g weight loss. A vet appointment was booked ASAP. Sadly my sweet little boy has extreme dental issues. He had teeth surgery around a year ago. I have no clue how I did not catch this sooner and feel absolutely awful. Surgery again would not help and so we were given 2 options. Try anti biotics and anti inflammatory meds but they may not help, might make the diarrhea worse and if they do help he might go back to being worse once coming off them but there is a chance they may work or Sadly we put him to sleep. We chose to try the meds first but the anxiety and grief is so much. I can't bear the thought of losing my little boy but also cant stand knowing that he is in pain and seeing him so ill. I am also providing critical care feed of course but its been such a tough day and I am also extremely anxious about his loving friend Sparky. Hoping that Jamie will pull through 💕🤞

I am wishing the best for you and your pigs, it's really hard when they go downhill so fast.

I am so sorry your sweet boy is so ill.
What dental issues does he have?
Sending healing wishes to Jamie 💙

Thank you everyone 🥲 This mornjng he was resisting critical care feed too so I am going to try again later. It's one of his bottom incisors that has become infected sadly. Also, his friend Sparky hasn't been eating as much as usual and lost a small amount of weight due to this, I was wondering if maybe it is due to stress/the fact that he is lying next to Jamie for the whole day. Has anyone else experienced this or any ideas what I should do?

Hi

I am very sorry that you are having such a stressful and sad time. Please offer Sparky some top-up feed or move some hay close to where your boys are lying and see how that goes.

Thank you. I placed some hay close to where they are resting which definitely helped and Sparky seems to be eating a little more now which is a good sign.

Sadly my sweet little boy passed peacefully at 3:56pm today. He was nice and warm cuddled with his friend Sparky. Jamie was such a brilliant piggie and had such a brilliant personality. It is so so sad to see him go yet I am glad that he will no longer be in pain and can be with his other cage mate Bubble who passed aged 2. Sparky seems to be doing okay and understands what has happened. Thank you for everyone's support. Sleep tight Jamie. You are so so loved and will be forever and always 🌈❤️

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that Jamie has made his journey to the Rainbow Bridge. But you have allowed him to do this on his own terms and from his familiar surroundings, supported all the way by Sparky's and your love.

Be kind with yourself, try not to overthink and give yourself time to not be OK for a little while as you come to terms with your loss.

If you find Jamie's absence too heart-breaking so close to Christmas, give him a thought before the festivities and light a candle in a safe dish (while you are in the same room) or plug in a little light for him during the festivities so you honour the fact that he is with you in your thoughts but that at the same time you have the freedom to laugh and enjoy the holiday, too, whenever you feel like it.

I am so very sorry for your loss, Jamie crossed The Rainbow Bridge knowing he was loved and always will be 🌈
Popcorn happily sweet boy 🌈
