hi,
i am new to this forum so i hope this is a successful post.
i discovered a strange 'thing' in my guinea pigs cage this morning.
it looks like a mass of fur (maybe a lump of guinea pig at distance), on closer inspection it seems to be a mass of short fur, straw, and also i can see two small guinea pig legs! it is very worrying. the two female guinea pigs recently bought at 6 weeks old from my trusted local pet shop are healthy. i thought miscarriage but there is no blood, the clump is dry. it is really strange and worrying.
my vets is closed now until tuesday so i am desperate for advice on this matter.
the pigs are fine. no sign of anything bad at all. the long-haired pig was acting strange yesterday. a little more snappy with the shorter haired pig and she was doing her 'slow walking' around the cage abit more yesterday and it seems like she has calmed down a little since the find. the hair on the clump is black (the same as the long-haired pig) but is really short.
it is the strangest thing i have ever seen!

help please!

I think this probably is a miscarriage. Is the sow o.k.in herself.,eating, moving normally.I have never bred gps so am not the right5 per45son to help you.Hopefully ;lsomeone who has experience of pregnancies will be able to advise you.

Is there any discharge from the genital area?..The worry here is that the miscarriage may not be complete and if this is the case, the sow could be in danger of getting septaceamia.

I'm sorry if I offended you by saying that. I am not very familiar with what you were describing xx

could be something from the hay like a dead mouse or something ?

no, it didnt offend. thanks anyway

response to maryh-

i have fed them some salad and they are eating fine. no discharge either.
they seem fine in themselves.

iloveanimals

that may be what it is!

it would make alot of sense!

yeah :) some things liek that do happen as i read about it on this forum the other day O0 a dead mouse or rabbits foot or something was found, maybe coming from the hay or bedding :)

yeah, it looks a little like that!

although mine has legs!

thanks for everyones help with this. it had me very concerned.

I have ha the most unfortunate situation where one of my guineas suffered a mummified birth, the lump that came from her was nothing more than a dry lump of black fur with legs?

just a thought but it could be what the others have said about a decapitated rodent from the hay

thought it may be that but it was completely dry. the pigs show no signs of shock.

also, the hay was changed just before it was found.

did your pig recover from the birth?

I was gonna say the same happened to me perhaps you have the other half of my lovely animal ::)

eeewww not another one! I'm gonna be putting my hay in strand by strand at this rate LOL ::)

Oh I dread putting my hand in hay bags now! Think I'm going to get a concealed tub and go through it before I give it. It freaks me out! Being a florist I've found dried frogs and dead mice in bales of moss urgh I can't cope with things like that! :embarassed:

Welcome to the forum by the way, sorry I missed your post yesterday! ;)

hope you've got over the shock of finding that! not nice :(
hope it was just a nasty thing in the hay but keep an eye on your girls just in case :)

yeah, got over the shock.

thanks for the welcome to this forum.

i am keeping an eye on them.

Sorry you've had this shock - not very nice and I totally understand you thinking the worst. It's perfectly plausible that one of your piggies could have been pregnant when you got her. It happened to us - a buy one get two free deal! It's also quite possible it was something already in the hay. I once found a flattened frog in mine - very bizarre! If your piggie is doing fine I'd bin it and forget about it. But if you're still worried maybe take it to your vet along with your piggie. They'll be able to give her a check up and perhaps identify if it is a miscarriage or not.
