Hi,

New here, and looking for advice please
have a just over 3 year old guinea pig *Star* he stopped eating three days ago, have used sringe to get some rescue type food into him, and some cranberry juice.

he smells of urine and have to keep washing his tummy, he keeps arching his back up and makes a noise (bit like a cats meow) he has picked at some celery leaves this morning, and had a tiny nibble of cue... but still arching and making this horried noise about once or twice every 15 mins..

I can't get a vet app until thursaday, i'm very worried :'( he lives indoors anyway, but have him in travel box so i can keep him even warmer on towels which is easier to change and keep him dry and clean..
can anyone help/ advice me please
thanks x x

Could be a water infection with the smell of urine. Can you ring around a few vets he needs antibiotics straight away. As you are probably aware guinea pigs can go down quickly they need to keep eating so if he isn't then you will need to syringe feed him some mashed pellets or critical care if you have any.

I would ring around a few vets though, where abouts are you?

Good luck!

Louise

hi just a thought but if you have a garden, get him some grass.. if he's picking at food he might eat some grass.

Id ring around different vets or ring your current vet and say its an emergency and you need to see a vet surely they will squeeze you in

Hi and welcome from us in OZ :)
I agree with Louise this little piggie needs a vet now, can you try to get an emergency vet appointment, sounds like at first piggie needs pain relief and then some antibiotics as well O0
We'll be keeping our paws crossed for Star :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Where are you love ? ? ? ? i'm sure if we know we can get some help O0 O0

Hi another thing you could do to help your piggie is to preboil some water let is cool slightly and add it to say a soup spoon full of pellets let it go mushy and offer this O0 there is all the nutrients O0 make sure also that lots of water is being consumed O0
WELL DONE you got an early appointment that's great O0
a pity the close one you don't trust :( :( :( know what you mean tho........... i'd not go to my closest vet i've got two real close NO WAY they don't understand little people aka piggies :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

EDIT: awwwwwww that's fab news, now this is a good step... but i'd still go to the vets you need to find out why he's been so uncomfortable :( :(

Poor wee man, do get him to vets as soon as you can. Could be a urinary tract infection or stones. He may need a scan to see which one. Hope he feels better soon :)

thanks all,
will try doing the pellets O0
yes, even if he makes a full recovery over night (ohh i wish he would, be over the moon)) i will still take him to the vets, as somethings caused it, want his teeth checked anyway...

its hard to help Star as he goes into such a panic when i try to do anything with him, only had 1 piggi before Star that one my son had from a school friend who never wanted him/her it turned (( so got Star as a mate for Jane, who was it turned out a boy Jane ? then a year ago lost Jane old age) Jane loved cuddles, baths, brushing everything, but not Star he flaps has always been like this, his heart goes mad and he gasps, so makes me extra worried over upsetting him to much esp while his not well.
he's such a baby, bless him.. sometimes he will sit on my lap for awhile but sure hes happier when i put him back in his den..

worse than kids arn't they defy more worry when their ill :'(
thanks again,.

have to phone the vet back in 15 mins
hugs x x x

SEE MY POST BEFORE THIS ONE...

Won't know if i don't go for it will i ? phew i hate this,... am shaking
advice really welcome

HAS ANYONE HAD SIM DONE FOR THEIR PIGGI x

Why not give Vedra at CCT (cambridge Cavy Trust) a call. 01480 417378

She would be able to advise more on the best course of action and I am sure these ops are quite routine, although there is always a risk.

I am not sure what the conversion is miney wise, I amin the US, but I would spend the money nd try to save Star. I believe that people should do whatever they can to save another living being, whether that may be giving the animal up to someone who can take care of it, spending some money. But if you can not afford that, euthanasia is an option too, you can;t let the poor thing suffer until she dies. But in my opinion, I think you should get it removed.

Hi,
thanks for replies, just spoken to my husband and we both feel we have to go for the op, the vet said its unusal for a stone to form where it is,.. have phoned the vet back and now waiting for him to contact me again, guess he's going to do it today,.. hope so,..sorry to have asked you's unfair of me, i just did not know what to do other than :'(
going to make a strong coffee and pray I'm doing whats best
will post back later.. thanks x

It's all right, I think that maybe you just needed the confirmation that you were doing the right thing by having the surgery. Give her a kiss :-* adn i hope that all work out well for you.

Do it. Never let a pig just die.

My Scarby 0:) had a 200g tumour and lobe of liver removed. He was eating grass again only hours later. We have to do all we can for our pigs. I would always go to surgery rather than give up.

Good luck to you and the patient :smitten:

Dont apologise...... if the vey says there's agood chance he'll be fine then you have to have the op. Good luck, hope all goes well. Keep us posted. xx

Thanks, have to give him the chance.. am still shaking my husband just phoned back from work said his been thinking and is l sure were doing the right thing and we will get over the cost, really feel Star has to have the op its the only way we will know and give him that chance,

Vet said he would have put him to sleep right away (Star is still at the vets) Vet phoning again at 3pm hope his doing the op right away?

Hearing about Scarby helped :smitten: thank you

will update asap! thanks for helping me ((and esp *Star* through this O0
