Very sadly I think we are currently loosing one of our boys, Mr Spicy.

Quick onset of Weight loss, vet appointment & blood tests revealed everything working as it should but an infection somewhere. Have been treating with antibiotics & pain relief but at 4 1/2 years old he has not responded ( on day 5 of meds) He is warm, peaceful & on pain meds so hopefully as comfortable as he can be.

My question is what to do with his brother? They have been together since birth & I don't know what to do. Do I keep them together until Mr Spicy potentially passes? Or now that mr Spicy is indoors with me, leave his brother in his hutch in our shed? My plan is to have mr Spicy in my arms tonight until I need to sleep & then pop him in a large cat crate until the morning.

If / when mr spicy passes, I have a local rescue that can either help find a friend or take Rocket on.

I would put the boys together. I think it will be more stressful for Mr Spicy if he is without his friend. How knowledgeable with guinea pigs is your vet? If there is one more knowledgeable near by it might be worth visiting them for a second opinion to see if they can locate the problem. What antibiotics has he been given and would your vet consider using a different type as the infection isn't reacting to the current meds?

Our vets have a good reputation & have exotic specialists. Trinity vets in Maidstone.i will call them again in the morning & see if we can try a different antibiotics, good suggestion x so would you keep them together in the shed or together indoors? Mr Spicy is cold so I've been keeping him warm ( hence my worry about going back to the shed). He has no interest in food & I have given him some water via a surringe.

He has only taken a turn for the worse today.

He is on metacam for pain & sulfatrim anti biotic.

I would bring them both inside. Have you got any critical care feed that you can syringe him as well to top him up if he isn't eating enough

Poor Mr Spicy, if they are very closely bonded it would be better to let him be with his brother so could you have both in beside you and just disturb your sick one when he needs meds etc. He'd probably feel more comfortable with his brother near him.

Ok, I'm roll My up my sleeves & not letting mr Spicy go without a fight. I now have both boys inside in a dog crate. I don't have critical care... I can get some in the morning I'm assuming from a vet? Is there anything home made I can give him in the mean time?

Yes. Heat some water and make some of his pellets into a sloppy mash and syringe feed this. Add Vit c or Avipro etc if you have any? Check syringe feeding instructions on the Forum posts. Also have you a hot water bottle you can wrap up and place under him? My sick piggy seemed to appreciate this.

Yes absolutely few pellets, hot water, mix it all up and hopefully he will take it well. If you don't have any probiotics you can use a few of his healthy cage mates poops in it too and he'll lap it up... mmmm.... poop soup
