Had Weasel in run and something blew off line, just caught him finishing off a cotton thread, couldn't catch him in time
Run out for liquid paraffin or can I use olive oil for quickness as will have to walk to shops?

Hopefully it will work its way through, though personaly l definitely wouldent try liquid paraffin, if he starts to show any signs of there being a problem see a vet

I don't think a cotton thread is more dangerous than a great piece of plastic net regularly eaten by my destructive piggies...
and cotton is even a natural material...

panicking a bit as seen problems with animals eating long threads as it can bunch up intestine as it passes through causing a blockage. is there a reason not to give liq paraffin? thought it was on the first aid list.?

I was thinking about a normal short thread for sewing. But maybe it is better to talk on the phone with a vet... I don't know if paraffin can do worse or be useless...

Just phoned, couldn't speak to a vet :( Receptionist asked a nurse who said that they couldn't recommend giving liquid paraffin and if I didn't want to come in for a consultation then just to monitor him!
Don't see the point of taking him in, as its just sat in his stomach at the moment, what could a vet do?

From guinea lynx forum ; quote "All of this just amazes me. Pig stomachs must work very differently than dog and cat stomachs. I wish I had a dollar for every time I had to assist with an emergency sx for a critter that ate string. One end will often get stuck and the other end keeps going. It ends up pulling the intestines together like an accordion. Very bad, sometimes if cuts as it pulls."
This is what I'm afraid of.

phoned around branch surgeries of my vet, waiting for vet to phone back.

My cat did this recently! I had to take him for an emergency appointment at the vet because he started vomiting up his food and they were worried it had caused an obstruction. He was put under and x rayed but the vet found nothing and really didn't want to open him up without seeing a good reason (obstruction etc on the x ray) so she sent him home with liquid paraffin. After that he was back to normal. I never saw the thread come out the other end and I never saw him bring it up, so it was probably hidden in his poop.

I've no idea if guinea pigs would be the same or not but giving the vet a call is probably the best bet. Good luck :)

Ok vets say monitor but not to give liquid paraffin as they aren't sure about it, but to get him to eat as much as possible to bulk it out in the hope it will help pass it!
Thanks for the quick replies xx
