Does anyone have any links to good, reputable sites that explain that guinea pigs should be weaned at 3 weeks but not sold on until 6-8 weeks, and the reason why.
Most reputable rescues follow the same basic timeframe as I do.
Baby boys weaned no earlier than 3 weeks, if weight is below 250g left with mum a little longer then minimum is 200g, no later than 5 weeks. Behaviour is also a factor - they will practice before they are potent but even the smallest males can be potent by 5-6 weeks.
Females can be left with mum and weaned naturally by 6 weeks. Baby girls are fertile from 4-5 weks old.
Rehoming at 6 weeks+, 400g minimum, to ensure they are thriving away from mum and growing normally. Failure to thrive can be an indication of congenital problems and should therefore not be passed to a new owner.
