Urgent help for chip!

Baytril is 0.4ml twice a day, yes. However, for an underweight pig the dose may be better off reduced. For most adult guineas, 0.4ml twice daily is the correct dose.

Metacam is a slightly more flexible drug to dose - it can range from 2 drops to 6 drops, depending on the level of pain the pig is suffering. It is worth using an accurate dose - in the case of Metacam, 2 drops is equal to 0.1ml. This dose sounds fine for a pig in his situation.

It sounds ike the mite treatment was stopped too early, didn't quite get rid of the last of the eggs and mites. Three doses one week apart should do the trick - fingers crossed it works this time!

Impaction can affect the normal poops too - if the sac is blocked a bit with the soft "caecal" poops, it can slow down the exit of harder faeces. Frankie is my neutered boar with impaction; he's rarely blocked up with soft poops (I clean him once weekly as it is a mild case), but he always has two or three normal poops hanging out of his bum. :))

Well we have just had antibiotics, critical care and metacam. We quite like metacam and critical care but dont go much on antibiotics lol :))

I've (hopefully) attached some pictures, theyre not too clear though. There is one of him enjoying his critical care with it all round his mouth!

I think then i will keep his Baytril at 0.2ml twice a day as he is a bit underweight, unless anyone thinks otherwise.

Ps excuse my manky top, he likes to wipe his mouth on me when hes done so am wearing an old painting jumper lol

ooh that looks really sore! poor boy hope he makes a swift recovery and is pain free soon. He has a really gorgeous face, sending you all the best wishes

AWW that's nasty but what a looker he is in that last photo. Gorgeous boy.

I mixed antibiotics with a little ribena and that helped them go down a treat. Vet recommended and it actually worked.

"Mange/mites etc is considered by alot of vets to be catching but I've never fund this to be the case and certainly it can be caused and aggrivated by stress"

How can stress cause mites?

I thought that all piggies have mites on them but stress causes an outbreak or a reaction... hence a bullied or otherwise unwell pig can end up with mites too, even though the cage mates are healthy

Aww poor Chip, his sores look nasty. He is a gorgeous piggy though x)
Well done for helping him out, fingers crossed he makes a full recovery xx

He is not looking too good this morning. Every so often i can here him squealing and throwing himself round in his hutch and his wounds are open and bleeding again today. I think he's scratching himself and its hurting him. Does anyone know if i can sort of wrap his middle up with like vet wrap or something to stop him from opening his wounds up? I've seen it done somewhere before but i can't find it. Its absolutely heart breaking.

OMG that's sad. I have no idea what to do for the best. He sounds in agony, the pain killers not working enough maybe?

Poor chip :(

The wounds are alot worse than the pictures. Its almost like they aren't surface wounds, like they have gone into the flesh. Its hard to explain lol. I've looked on peter g site and it says to use a tubigrip knee support with holes cut for the front legs so I'm going to try that. He's on 0.1ml of Metacam once a day. I think it's just when he itches and catches the scabs that it really hurts.

Good idea - well done Peter Gurney. His advice is invaluable.

Hope it helps Chip a bit. Poor guy.

It may be worth applying Aloe Vera gel or ointment to his skin, this can be very soothing and should calm the itching. Might be worth a try. It's not uncommon for pigs with severe skin problems to become extremely agitated and on edge; soothing the symptoms is equally as important as treating the cause.

Fingers crossed he starts feeling some relief soon.

Thanks for asking :)

He seems a lot better today. His wounds look really clean and look like he has managed to leave them alone, so i assume the xeno has started to work and he's not as itchy. I have been putting bepanthen on them and i think that is also helping.

He isn't as lethargic and squeaked and protested as much as he could against having his meds lol. He's still impacted with hard poos so we'll have to see whether it improves once hes feeling better.

Oh good. Did you use the tubi bandage in the end or no need?

Pleased he seems to be feeling better.

I bought one but it was a bit too tight. Since i posted earlier he has scratched them open again so I'm going to find a bigger one tomorrow when i go shopping and give it a go. He didnt seem too happy about having the other one on so we'll see how it goes. I don't know what else i can do to give them chance to heal.
