A day back I found this on my Dawn's leg:

263859_2087433795226_1526620936_4141005_5320383_n.jpg

Is this fungal infection?
I've been applying 100% pure Aloe Vera Gel on her... Help people. :(

I've been there, but this one doesn't look anywhere like Fungal at all, so I'm wondering @)

The only reason I could think of from there: Animals near weaning age Thinning of hair is frequently observed in young animals at time of weaning and is associated with "the period of transition between loss of baby fur and appearance of more coarse guard hairs".

But is it possible? It also looked like a bite mark, which Asti HAD accidentally when she was a baby, and it turns into this.

Sadly we don't have much small animals savvies here :( So I'll have to do with my 100% Aloe Vera Gel *Sigh*

It looks a bit like ringworm to me... is the outer layer of skin (next to the fur) a bit raised? Ringworm is something you will need a vet for- it needs an anti-fungal, aloe won't help at all. Since it is contagious to humans and other animals, it really does need treatment. If there aren't any really good cavy vets around, I would try a more general vet since ringworm/fungal is pretty common in dogs and cats as well... it might be easy to diagnose regardless of the species.

Hi Rilency
I also have the same problem with Vets here in Greece. Both of mine seem to have a fungal infection from all the research i've done. Although they have small patches of hair loss with scaly/slightly scabby skin.
I'm using Daktarin cream (for humans from the chemist) small amount on affected area twice a day. Also Nizoral shampoo (also for humans from the chemist) baths and good lathering once a week.
I researched this and also spoke to a Vet (not a small exotics though) who said this wouldn't do any harm but if didn't show any improvement or got worse within a week then I will need to consider mites........
Maybe you could try above for fungal? What does any more experienced piggy owners think?

I think Self medication is very dangerous - my pig had typical signs of Ringworm.

The red rings are typical of Ringworm - yet he was negative and cleared up without treatment - ironic.

Even the vet agreed this was typical of fungal - Ringworm. We did a Fungal culture to diagnosis the illness. Milo came back negative of all fungals.

The Fungals culture was done by running a toothbrush over Milo and then removing a 'pinch' of the affected area. Milo didn't mind.

Imaverol - is effective on Ringworm (this maybe something your vet will prescribe) - You do have to be very careful especially when babies are involved they should not be bathed before 12 weeks generally.

I think finally based on everyones advice I should take my 2 to the vet. Miracle of small miracles, after much internet searching, calling vets etc etc I managed to find a small exotics specialist in Greece :(|) that is only half an hour away from me! Tried for an appointment today but no luck, but we have for tomorrow morning.
Need to get my babies better....... :(

Another good thing is if you need a small animal exoctic - you've already tried and tested this one.

Could we have the vets details of the exoctic specialist, we have a lot of members in greece that struggle to find a good vet.

Below are the details for the Lagonissi one, the small exotics specialist is at the VARI one, they made the appointment for me through this one so I don't know the number for VARI. After my appointment tomorrow I'll post my thoughts on the VET and the details of the VARI clinic.

Good news people. I've a friend whose girl is having a case of Fungal now, and I sent her his way to have her treated :)

The phone number for the VARI clinic is 210 8953957, they have told me the exotics specialist is Nikos.

NOw the problem I have, the clinic just called to say that unfortunately they made a mistake and Nikos will not be there until Friday morning! mallethead

The piggies look like their skin is getting worse, there is another local vet, not a specialist, who can see them today?

Should I go there? Should I wait till Friday? What if they get much worse by Friday? I'm really worried and not sure what to do.........

Any comments/advice would be very welcome.

ts1 i would call and tell them your urgency, plead with them be nice and say you need to see somebody that understands guinea pigs :)
GOOD LUCK XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
and thankyou so much for your vet's list whee will update this information ( i so need to do this again!) xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

things are so difficult here sometimes! i could do with a tearing my hair out icon!:<>

no joy for the vet to see them earlier than friday and i'm really worried about them, they are very quiet today as well.

I called the athens zoo and begged the small animal exotics vet (whatever they're called) to help. He will see them as a one off favour for me tomorrow morning, phew. and then I can continue with the other guy from Friday.

Now I'm mad at myself because I should have researched vets before getting the piggies. Meantime I have also called the Veterinary School in Thessaloniki - for anyone that lives there they have an exotics/small animal centre that you can go to. Not much help for me but I spoke to the professor there who is the specialist, he will check out some recommendations for Athens as well and call me back.

With all this effort I'm sure that i'll find someone good in this area.

It can be super-frustrating to find vets that know what they're doing with small animals- I'm in Canada and it is difficult to find vets that know the first thing about guinea pigs here. I've luckily managed to find a good exotics vet who knows her piggies, but not before having one pig pass away who may have done better had her vet been more knowledgeable. :( It's good to 'test drive' a vet before there is a serious emergency- this way their skin can be seen and treated, and the vet can get some baseline information like weight and general health that will be useful should anything come up in the future.

ts1 ......... how'd you go today with the one off visit ? whee are sending lots of healing wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks and loves xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi! She's given the cream by my friend now and it looks much better, some of the bumps are gone! :))

Rilenceny - glad to hear you got something sorted for your fungal.

Hi Glynis - Thanks for thinking of us. The zoo guy was good i think. He took a culture to be 100% sure what it is. He thinks its fungal. He suggested using Canesten cream meantime! I guess he knows better than me.

He will give us the results of the culture in 4 days.

He also offered to consult with the other vet I found (who said he was an exotics specialist but is not registered as an exotics)

Anyway here in Greece i'm just trying for the best I can and if I find a good vet i'll be sure to post it for anyone else in the Athens area.

Hey, sorry I wasn't able to help out before when you first started this post :( I'm glad Dawn is feeling better! What did the vet say it was?

sorry to hijack your post again Rilenceny!

The Zoo vet called today to confirm Dermatophitos (i googled it, its Ringworm) and to continue with Canesten (cream for humans) twice a day for the next 5 days. If it shows no signs of improvement then he will give something oral. He said he would prefer not to give oral because of how young they are.

Now my question is this, I'm sure that in England an exotics specialist vet would not give Canesten? I have been putting the Canesten already for the last 5 days twice a day and it hasn't got worse but also don't see any improvement. I said this to the Vet and he told me to continue for another 5 days.

Just because i'm so not convinced could some more experienced owners please give me their opinion on the Canesten?
