Hi everyone, need help please my piggie is not well :( My guinea pig is one year old . On Saturday 11th Aug, we took our guinea pig to the the vets because she had a scratch on her eye and the ine eye seemed dull. She was eating and she was her normal self. Any way the vet give us fucithalmic eye drops to use twice daily, he also put a dye in the eye to see if it was a scratch.

Anyway by Tuesday 14th Aug, she was alot worse she was still eating, cause i know from having guinea pigs before that its bad when the stop eating. She dident seem to have balance and her eye looked alit worse, she was just siting in the same place in the cage. So i took het back to vets Wednesday 15th, and the vet said the scratch had gone to deep and we can either have her eye removed or have her put to sleep. So we said we would have her eye removed.

So on Thursday 16th Aug, we took her to have the op, and her eye seemed alot better. So before we left her, we said we wanted the vet to look at her eye, he said it was alot better and its up to us if we have it done! He just dident seem to care!

So we left with baytril oral to give her twice a day, and the vet said come back in a week. We have bern doing this, and she seems worse, shes tilting her head to the side and has no balance! When i put food out she comes to the front to get some from her bowl, shes intrested in the food! But cant seem to chew anything.

Iv been giving her blended veg, and shes able to lick that from the spoon, I'm making sure she has water.

I just dont know what to do! Help please, when ever i go to the vets, thry dont seem to care about little pets x

try a different vet! If it was me and i wasn't happy with the advice, i'd take my piggie to a different vets and ask them.

I am so sorry to hear this. How terrible of the vet. If you say were you are it will help people to recommend a vet to you. I do not know what you can do for your little one but hopefully somebody will be on here and be able to help.

There may be hope for her if you see a guinea pig savy vet. Please say were you are so people can help you find one.

Hello!

If you can let us know where you are (as we have members all over the world) we will try and help locate a vet that are knowledgeable in Guinea Pigs.

A knowledgeable vet will help your poor little piggy!

Edit:
Oooh Piggyfan beat me too it!

We are in Staffordshire, Lichfield. So could go to vet in Lichfield, Rugeley, Stafford or Cannock! Just been to check on her, shes judt sitting there with her head to the side! Poor littlr girl :( so sad

I know Helen at the Potteries guinea pig rescue is in Stoke on trent and she really recommends to see Hannah at Taylor and Marshall vets in Shropshire http://www.taylorandmarshallvets.co.uk/index.html. I have seen Hannah myself at a different surgery and she is very good!
I don't know how how far away you are, but if you could travel it may be an idea. I can't offer much help as I'm not from around that area.
Just checked on google maps and from lichfield to the vets postcode it is a 40 min drive!

Thanks everyone, its nice to know there are people out there who love guinea pigs as much as me. Ill ring another vets in the morning.

Has anyone else ever had this problem with there piggys? The thing thats giving me hope, is the fact she still seems interested in food! Shes just to weak to bite it, but is licking it when iv blended it. Shes just weak and has lost her balance :(

It couid be she has an ear infection and in scratching her ear has also damaged the eye. I suggest you get the ear checked and if pus is found, have it swabbed/cultured/sent of for antiibiotic sensitvity testing .

There is a nasty ear infection in guineas (pseudomonas) that is resistant to almost all antibiotics (inc baytril and septrin) except gentamycin and polymyxin b. Tiacil eye drops contain gentamycin and will help the eye but you do need to get her ear checked. If she needs treatment for the ear then I would suggest it;s worth having gentamycin injections daily - as well as ear drops. I;ve had two guineas with this infection and gentamycin injections seems to sort the problem.

Hope this hleps
x
