Albert had a dental on Friday ( see previous post) but has gone down hill. To cut a long story short hes had all of his meds and cc as he should. Hes now in hospital where he is laid completely flat out with his head stretched out in front of him. He has had additional sub c fluids, terrymicin and steroids and there has been no improvement but hes not getting worse. The vet doesn't know which way to go and I'm also at a loss. Time is short for the little man because I'm not sure if he is suffering and I don't want to take that chance.

Forgot to mention he has lost his chew reflex so he isn't able to swallow an awful lot

I've replied to your PM - if he can swallow a bit that's better than not being able to swallow at all...

Hi there I'm so sorry to hear about Albert, when he had his dental did he have any form of general anaesthetic ?

A lot of vets have a standard general anaesthetic cocktail that they use on their daily operations this sometimes contains a drug called Domitor .

As I understand it one of its primary uses is to help stopping animals regurgitating whilst under anaesthetic, but has this is not the case with Guinea pigs
number 1 it is not needed.
But number 2 and more important Domitor has the ability to store itself in the animal's body and reactivate causing drowsiness and loss of muscle coordination

this is especially the case in Guinea pigs and the reason it should never be used. Although it doesn't always happen if it does happen , to A Guinea pig that isn't the middle of eating, the effect is the piggy chokes to death

Several years ago I lost a young boar to this drug , also I have had several instances of pig's not waking up properly for up to 36 hours, (some people report longer)

You may also remember the case a couple of years ago with "lavenderjade", a vet did a dental on her pig, and Domitor was used.and the pig died soon after

It may be an idea to find out of your vet it, tour has been used on Albert

OOpppssss mallethead Sorry about the multi posts I was trying to edit the original the my computer is gone barmy mallethead

Thanks for all your words of advice and kind thoughts. Unfortunatly this afternoon, a joint decision between me my daughter and the vet it was decided to help Albert to the bridge. He had remained 'flat' with all that's been tried and we all thought it was the best for him. The vet is uncertain as to what caused this. All I know is that there is an Albert shaped piece of heart missing and it hurts so much.

I am so sorry you have lost Albert. Hugs to you and popcorn free little guy x

I am ever so sorry that Albert hasn't made it. What a sad shock for you all! 8...

Sorry that Albert has gone over the bridge. Hugs to you and your daughter at such a sad time.
RIP now Albert, sweet little guy.

I am so sorry. I was so hoping he would pull through. You have done everything you could for Albert. massive hugs to you x

RIP Albert

So very sorry to hear the bad news about Albert, But it sounds like you made the right choice under the circumstances, (hugs)

Can I just say a big thank you to Furryfriends and Pebble for their advice. It did make a very difficult decision a little bit easier. I suppose you just want to know that you have made the right choice but no matter what I still cant help feeling should I maybe have given him a little bit more time. It was the same when Panda was helped to the bridge. I think it's because they make such a huge impact on our lives it's so very difficult when they leave us. I'm stopping now because I'm crying to much I cant see the keyboard properly. Thanks again. x

I just wanted to say that I understand the heartache you must be going through right now.

I had to have 3 piggies PTS this year :( One in January and two in May.

I have so many thoughts and what ifs and regret having them PTS.

However, I also remember how poorly they were at the time and it would have been cruel to let them go on.

You made the right decision for Albert. You let him go with dignity and saved him from anymore suffering xx

I'm so sorry, it really sounds like you made the right decision. Please don't tie yourself up in knots, I used to do the same until a good friend told me "better a day too early than a day too late". It 100% sounds like it was his time though and you stopped him having to suffer.

I'm so very sorry your little guy has lost his fight but I think yoh made absolutely the right decision. Popcorn free Albert x
