hi, I have a 1 year old Guinea pig called, Kenneth who keeps crying with pain it seems every time he goes to the toilet ( poos) also I've noticed drops of blood in his cage and bed . I'm going to call the vets first thing in the morning but I'm very concerned cos he's put himself in the back of his bed but I can just hear him crying all the time , he doesn't want to eat and I don't know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If he is not eating anything then you may need to step in with some syringe feed but you are doing the right thing by planning to call the vets straight away. Tell them he is refusing to eat and they should push it as an emergency and get you in very quickly

You've done the right thing by getting him into the vet as soon as you possibly can to assess for urinary infection/stones/blockages. If he is refusing food, you may need to syringe feed him to keep him from developing gut stasis or further problems- check out the sticky note at the top of the page for detailed information on how to do this. Stress to the vet that he's in pain and not eating- you want to be sure as soon as you can that there is not a stone lodged in the urethra, which can be fatal. All the best and hoping he feels much better soon!

:agr: Sending lots of healing vibes, please let us know how he gets on at the vets :)

Thank you for your advice, sadly there was a blockage in his urethra the vet tried operating but the blockage was too big and Ken had to be put to sleep. I'm devastated, he was only 1 year old and such a friendly chap.

So sorry to hear this.
It’s such a hard decision even when we know it is the best thing.
You gave Ken one last gift of love. Hold on to that as you grieve,

I’m so sorry. But you made the kindest decision for him. Popcorn free little man.

Its always hard when we lose a special friend. Kenneth is now out of pain and you did the best for him.

Thank you for all your kind words. Ken was always my easiest pig , so well behaved and gentle( he reminded me of another pig I used to have, Harry who died aged 2).ken was a real mummy's boy and always ran to me if anything upset him, he liked to perch on my shoulder where it was safe! I just can't believe he's gone, just days ago he was out in the garden having fun and a few nights ago he was chasing me about my room after parsley 🙂 This has been a very stressful year so far it feels like everything is going wrong. Atleast I have 5 other pigs to keep me busy.image.webpimage.webp

we have other pigs that need looking after. it's hard to pretend we not hurt but the pigs would know and they keep us going.
Be Strong. x

This is so sad, but you did the best for your little friend. It hurts so much to let them go.
Sleep tight Kenneth.xx

Thanks. Recently I read that giving vitamin c in water can cause bladder stones in Guinea pigs ( but the vet told me I should use a vit c solution) now I feel like it could've been my fault Ken got ill.

I’m really sorry for your loss :(
Please don’t blame yourself, you did everything you could to help him and were following your vets advice. There is still some mystery around what can bring on Bladder stones and I’m sure no concrete evidence regarding vit c drops. It’s always hard to accept when they get ill but he is popcorning free now. X

When a piggy dies , the owner always wants to blame there selves. But its normally never our fault and it DEFINITELY was not in your case. I recently lost one of my piggys (4years) and i blamed myself for her passing. But was not my fault either. Just remember that Kevin had an incredible life full of fun and cuddles. Never forget that. xx:love:Rip

Thank you . It's hard not to blame yourself when you're so responsible for your animals health and wellbeing. I've not been very lucky over the years with a lot of my pigs ( especially the boys) I've lost 3 all under 2 years of age , all from very different problems, and of course Patrick was a lethal white ,who though amazingly made it to 4 yrs old, was always a worry(and a blessing 💗).
