the other day one of my piggies’ eye began going crusty and closing and i took her to the vets and was told she had a damaged cornea which she’s been having eye drops for, i’m taking her back to the vet today for a checkup and i’ve noticed now her other eye is slightly closing. I’ve also got my other piggie to check her over and she’s now got the same crusty eye and closing, ive cleaned it but i’m not sure why they’ve both got eye issues? is it something contagious? i’ll post pics of the piggie thats now got the watery eye

That eye does look nasty - it is good you are going back to the vet with her.
What medications was she given?
She may simply need a different or stronger medication, but only a vet can say for sure.

:agr: They both need to return to the vet. Most vets won't mind you taking both along to the appointment, so just give them a call.

Please take both and have them looked at. The problem is not an infection but an injury like a scratch, a hay poke or something scratchy stuck under the eye lid. Ulcerating (i.e. infected) eye injuries are a common piggy hazard. Make sure that you use soft hay to sit and sleep in and offer any stalky hay in a hay rack. ;)

took them. Dougals eye (ginger) hasn’t been getting better why eye drops so she’s been prescribed with stronger ones and painkillers
Luna the three colour one, they said she damaged the surface of her eye and was given eye drops

All the best with the stronger antibiotic eye drops!

What you can do additionally to help support the healing process is to apply artificial tear gel to the injured eyes. This helps with the hydration of the eye, especially in deeper levels than the medicated drops can reach and helps to speed up the healing process as well as providing additional comfort in the eye. You need to wait for at least half an hour after the antibiotic eye drops before you can apply the tear gel to make sure that they antibiotic is fully absorbed. My own piggy savvy vet prescribes them routinely for any eye injury, and in my own experience with a goodly number of eye pokes and scratches, the extra hydration/lubrication really makes a difference in the healing process. Tear gel is not classed as a medication; it can be easily got from a pharmacy or online. You can use plain artificial tear drops, but the effect is not as long lasting and you will have to apply them 4-6 times a day instead of 3 times with the gel.
