Just wondering if anyone can help me. I have been at work today and OH phoned me to say that Eliza had a really soft poop. She managed to get it all over her face and he cleaned her up. It isn't a lot but the few she has done have been very watery :( She is a little quiet but apart from this, is acting her usual self and even squeaking for veggies (which I'm not going to give her tonight). Yesterday, OH gave them some grass and for their tea last night they had some lettuce from a bagged salad I have never tried before. They both also had a little hothouse lettuce for breakfast this morning. Could she have an upset tummy from something she has eaten or could it be something more serious? What should I do as I am worried :(

Aww no Claire sorry to hear this. Sounds like runny bum from food! I would lay off the veg and give her a dry diet. She how she goes through the night and maybe get her to the vet tomorrow.

If she is her usual self then try not to worry it is when they are ruffled up and refusing everything that is when it is really serious, just as Pearl was. Keep her hydrated as well!

Hope she is ok. x

Try giving her a diet of just water and fresh hay. As long as she is eating the hay, the diahorrea will clear up within 24 hours :)

I'd blame the lettuce, two of mine get funny with lettuce and not always when they have to much, sometimes it just doesn't sit right! Hope she's feeling better after her dry diet x

Some pigs are very sensitive to too much lettuce, and grass is very rich so can upset some pigs if they are not used to it. Try not to worry yourself Claire, easier said than done I know! Applying logic to the situation can be hard but you noted the new foods that were given, so you can treat based on that unless anything else changes.

As the others have said - plenty of fluids is the priority, along with lots of hay and dry food (both high fibre), and a bit of probiotic if you have some.

Hugs to you and Eliza, hope she's back on track very soon. x

Thank you for your replies. I keep on checking on Eliza and she is still quiet but she has eaten and had a drink. I do have some probiotic but it goes in to the water bottle. Am I best to syringe her some or just put it in the water bottle? I am going to leave her for a day or so (unless she gets worse) and if her poops don't go back to normal, I'll be making a vets appointment x

Always syringe what you want to get into a guinea pig, as you can't control the drinking from a bottle.

Best of luck!

how is she now? is ellie ok? xxxxxxxx thinking of you and eliza xxxxxxxx

Thank you all. I checked on Eliza at 6.30 this morning as I was worried about her and she seems fine. She is still a little quiet but not puffed up or anything. They were both bobbing their heads around waiting for their morning veggies and were disappointed with their hay bale :)) I'm going to leave Eliza on dried food today. I will give Ellie a little veg away from Eliza in a bit. I felt around in the hutch and haven't came across any watery poo's. I imagine that if it was bad, it would be all over the hutch? x

Yep, the diarrhea to worry about most is the watery kind. Soft poops aren't as bad as runny ones, so I am sure things will get back to normal very quickly. If things were looking bad, she'd be puffed up, sunken eyes, reluctant to eat etc.

It looks like you've ben spared the really bad type!

Keep Eliza on dry food, but plenty of water, for a couple of days until her poos look normal again.

Give her cuddle from me for the patient!

Oh this is wonderful news........i was so hoping she'd not got really bad runs 8...
Bless her i hope she don't mind her dry diet for a few days, i'm sure once all is back to normal she'll be wheeeeeeking her head off for some veggies :))
More healing wheeeeeeeeks and lots of loves from me and the girls xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Aww I'm glad that Eliza hasn't got any worse Claire - fingers crossed that she is back to her usual self ASAP xx

I have had them both out this morning and Eliza has some really soft poops but luckily, they are not runny anymore. I opened the fridge and she wheeked her little heart out for veggies and made me feel guilty. Eleanor had her veggies in another room away from Eliza :) She is feeling sorry for herself today :) x

Update. Is this normal?

Eliza was looking a bit sad yesterday and I decided that if she still wasn't right today, I would make her a vets appointment. Today however, her poops seem more or less normal, just a little smaller than usual and she is much brighter and alert. She seems her happy self again. However, she has lost weight since Sunday :( Is this normal for a guinea pig who has had a bit of a stomach upset? Also, she is still on a dry food diet as I don't want to give her veggies until her poo's are 100% back to normal (which the nearly are).

As the digestive tract was out of order, it is absolutely normal the Eliza has lost some weight. She'll pick up again, once she's eating fully again!

Do hope she is a little better today Claire. Totally agree if you aren't fully happy to get her to the vet, you know her best. ((hugs)) x

Yeah it's absolutely normal. Her poops are smaller because she's had a bit of a diet decrease. Plenty of nice hay for her, you can try her with some porridge oats and bran to help build her back up and some raw beetroot when she's back on the veggies. Also she probably hasn't lost *that* much weight, she's probably just a bit dehydrated like us humans get.

Update :(

I have had to take Eliza to the vets this evening as when I got home from work, the diarrhea is back :( Poor Eliza was covered in it and it was all over her belly. I rang the vets who suggested I take her in. He is 95% sure that she has a tummy bug as she has a bit of a temperature. She had an antibiotic injection and has been prescribed a course of Baytril 0.3ML twice a day along with a probiotic. She isn't puffed up and she is alert but does look a little sad. She is eating and drinking. Please send her vibes to get better soon xx

aww,Eliza, get better soon and get back to playing with Ellie and mommy! Sending healing vibes x

Oh no! :{:{:{

What an upset after she seemed to get better!

I'm keeping my fingers frimly crossed for her and sending my best sueaks on behalf of Llewi, Nerys and Nia!

BIG HUG

Wiebke xx
