It looks as if it's a combination of the wound and something else, which is why it might be driving her crazy with itching? Poor little girl. You can get that 'paint on' skin for cuts and grazes in awkward places where you can't put a plaster, I wonder if that might help after the wound has been thoroughly cleaned? Obviously once sure it's not some other condition. Good luck!

Someone said it looks like ringworm, it does a bit. I wouldn't have any idea what to put on that wound it looks so angry and is right next to the eye.

Shame you can't wrap them for weeks while it heals isn't it?

How is she in herself? (I mean is she freaking out any more?)

Can the vet prescribe metacam for the pain (does that work as a painkiller?)

Poor poor baby
:(

If the wee thing has mites & scruvy, it sounds like it could be the mites which is causing the severe scratching and itching. How old is she? You said she was quite young and it is recommended that young pigs shouldn't be covered with invermec, but if the infestation is bad enough to be causing her this level of distress, treatment is better than death. (Which can be caused by mite infestations)

Are you treating the scruvy too? (ie, vit c injections from your vet?Vit C supplements too) as this is something which should be getting addressed immediatly as the little thing could possibly die, and end up with a comprimised immune system, not to mention developmental defects.

Finally, in order to stop her scratching, I would suggest cutting up something like a sock, or something soft, and taping (with micropore surgical tape, you should be able to get this from your local chemists) these around her hind feet, covering her claws. I have known people to cover pigs with severe wounds/mite infections with socks to stop itching, and have used micropore on my own pigs to dress feet wounds.

Hope all this helps :) And your wee lady gets better quickly.

And wanted to add - yes, Lisajazz Metacam is a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory so it should help reduce swelling and possibily any itchiness caused by this, so it would definatly be worth going to the vet and discussing this with him/her.

The socks thing is genius. I was thinking that something like that needed to happen to stop the scratching. I was thinking to bandage the head but that wouldn't work. Poor thing, I can't get her our my mind tonight.

She is having the injections for her mites already. The vet, who is an exotic pet expert, said not to bath her for now as we didn't want to stress her any more and it may make the mites worse.

She is only 9 weeks old, can't believe how bad she is, her room mate who has turned out to be a boy is also really bad with mites and has scurvy. The scurvy should be ok with high vit c foods (not dire enough to need supplements).

We have Metacam in already, how much would you give? She is 9 weeks and weighs 200grams!

I had to give my 750g girl a drop on my finger. If you didn't give her any pain relief I would go for a small drop on your finger. My guineas like the metacam and lick it off. If not on a piece of cucumber or a leaf of some kind.

I know it's not the same but it really perked up Mork after his neutering. I hope this baby can get some relief.

Thanks very much everyone. I am off to bed now as my daughter will be awake soon and I need my kip!

Forgot to say too she is also on anti=biotics for the vut.

Will let you know how she has got on in the morning x

The condition looks worse than it is.
Any drugs should only be given to a pig under six months old if absolutely necessary and then at a much reduced dose compared to that given to an adult pig.
First aid treatment;
Put a thin smear of Bepanthen ointment, from the chemist, on the open wound. It is pertfectly safe to use.
Put a "boot" on the back foot to reduce "scratching damage"
The boot is just a piece of Micropore tape wound around the foot and toe-nails.
Be warned, it can take a long time to put the boot on and only a second for the pig to remove it!!
A few practice attempts and you will find the right technique.

Thanks so much every one again, she is looking so much better this morning. Will keep applying the ointment until it is gone as I don't want it to get itchy for her again. If she does it again we wikk defo do the boot on the back foot.

Thanks again x
