hi everyone.

I'm really worried about my guinea pigs. the lodger has come in last night after drinking and has put some toast in the guinea pigs cage.

i have picked up some poo and its hard and there hasnt been much poo in the cage. they both look bloated as well.

do i need to take them to the vets. please help me I'm so upset.

Yes, if they are bloated you must take them to the vet; it's a critical condition.

So sorry to hear they are unwell, I would go to the vets if things are not normal, better not to take any chances!

I'd go to the vets too and bill the lodger.

Hope they are okay.

Guineas can nibble a bit of toast (not advised!) but any bloat needs attention asap.

If their tummies are sowllen, painfully hard and springy, you need to see a vet asap. Real bloat can kill and it will come on fairly quickly It is rare that both piggies have it at the same time, though. However, if their tummies are still soft, you need not to panic; just keep an eye on their tummies and not give them any fresh food; just hay and water for a few days.

Have your piggies had enough to drink? Have they been very hot yesterday? While toast is not exactly the best of foods, it shouldn't really harm them.

How much of it did they eat? Toast shouldn't be too harmful as far as I know. When I was younger, I'd sometimes give my guinea pigs bits of stale bread (if it's a bit crispy, not mouldy) because I read on a website that that was ok, but now don't do that . . . but it never harmed them.

hi everyone

iv been to the emergency vet its cost me 100 quid :( but i care more about the pigs. i have been crying all day, i cant believe how someone could be so stupid, i went mad.

he has given them a painkiller injection because he thinks david might have colic and he said his gut isnt passing as strong as it should.

he said craigs gut seemed ok, but just wanted to be on the safe side as they havent passed any poo. i have got some fibreplex gel and some zantac which i need to give them both until they are passing normally again. i havent seen any of them poo today.

i have asked the lodger how much toast he put in it went from none, cant remember, to only a bit, but i found 2 chunks of it in the cage.

i hope my boys are ok, i dont like giving them medication either but i just didnt know what to do for the best and if anything happened to them i wouldnt of forgiven myself at all.

i was worried about getting pets because of how careless the lodger is and this has just reminded me of the possibilities that could happen with him. cant tell you upset i am. x

Good for you getting to the vets - stupid stupid lodger.

Well at least they have meds now - fibreplex is okay not sure about what the other tastes like. But I just gave 10 pigs foul tasting stuff and they still love me so don't worry too much about them having meds as long as it helps them eh?

Chin up - you did the right things getting them there and I hope they foot the bill!

Take care and let up on yourself. You have done the right thing.

x

Good thing you took them to the vet, hopefully they will be ok now.

That's so careless of the lodger, they're not his pets and he shouldn't interfere. Poor piggies.

Sorry about the upset; emergency vets can be VERY expensive!

Hopefully, your boys will be better soon. Please be careful not give them fresh food, especially cabbages, for a few days until the guts have stabilised again.

Make sure you weigh them daily!

thanks everyone for your support. Feel like I'm going mad today, and no one is taking me seriously as to how upset i am. (apart from you guys)

they still havent pooed. I'm concerned for them both.

they were both ok taking their meds.

Should i not feed them any veg tonight then? they will be gutted aaw.

they both very quiet, i think that might be the painkiller though thats made them a bit drowsy.

my boyfriend has got the money for the vets off the lodger. He hasnt been to see that htey are ok though. cant believe how careless some people are. stupid!

Big hugs hun. Well done on getting them to the vets so quickly. I would have done the same- I couldn't just sit there hoping for the best.

Come on boys, it's time to poop. :)

This is for the lodger malletheadmalletheadmallethead

Hope you and the piggies are doing much better! :rose
At least you know you can come on here for a rant and some support!
Well done to the bf for getting your money back!

thanks for the support everyone

david has been pooing yippeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I'm going to continue with his meds today then stop tomorrow. x

Phews! So happy they made it through that bread ordeal OK. :) That lodger is a right drongo BTW.

I bet you've never been so pleased to see poos!
Lodgers can be hopeless. I remember when I was a student my best friend and I shared a flat with two other people. She had a hamster and one night one of our flat mates came home drunk and got cross with the hamster because her wheel was squeaking so he decided to oil it with vegetable oil with the hamster still in it! When we woke up in the morning she was all sticky and had been sick trying to wash the oil off her. She suvived amazingly which is more to be said than the flat mate.
