Emergency Urgent Help! Stroke?

Another update. Daisy has now finished her course of Baytril. I am wondering if what I was given would be enough to clear an infection though. She has only had 0.2ml baytril injection first day, 0.2ml baytril injection 2nd day, 0.2ml oral baytril 3rd day and 0.2ml oral baytril 4th day and that is all she needs apparently. Does this sound enough? I have also been giving her probiotic but not sure if been giving her enough. 1ml 3 x a day. She is still eating although maybe not as much hay and pellets as usual but tucking into veg. Her poops are quite small but I'm thinking that might be due to baytril?

I was given nothing to put in her ears. Only xeno spot on on her neck. I'm worried the infection won't have 100% cleared up and don't want it getting any worse.

Any input appreciated.

Me again. This morning Daisy's poops are slightly soft and squishy :( I'm wondering if this is maybe due to increased veg I have been giving her including some grass and dandelions. It hasn't bee loads though. Just a small handful between both pigs. Hey weight still remains the same so does this mean she is still eating enough pellets/veg?

I have booked at appt at another vet for tomorrow as they had no appts today.

If the weight is stable, she is eating enough in hay and pellets. If the poos are are going soft, please reduce the amount of fresh food and up the amount of fibre in her diet. Daisy has been through a lot, so with all the medication, her digestion can stay a bit on the tender side for a while.

Thank you so much for your reply! Ok I am so pleased she is eating enough as that was my main concern. I will continue to weigh her daily and continue giving the probiotics too and of course cut back on the veg and hopefully that will help. Thanks again :)

Just checked on Daisy, her head is a little bit tilted and I noticed her stumbling! I have vet appt in morning but should I go to emergency vets now?

Most courses of antibiotics should run for a minimum of 7 days - and with ear infections it may be as much as 4 weeks.

Hopefully you should be OK to wait for vet visit tomorrow rather than tonight but none of us can really advise without actually seeing her.

If you think she needs a vet then take her sooner rather than later.

That's what I thought with regards to antibiotics :(
She is currently propped up against the food bowl, lying down trying to get some sleep. Probably annoyed at me pestering her. I will check on her throughout the night.

I hope Daisy's doing better! I can't offer too much advice but in regards to the soft poo - my own Daisy had slightly soft poos for a day or two after she was on antibiotics (for a UTI) and the vet said that's not uncommon, as long as it clears up within the next couple of days. Hope all goes well x

Thanks for your reply :)

Well the new vet (recommended vet on here) has given me a weeks course of baytril starting from today, 0.2ml twice a day. He has also given me metacam 0.2ml once a day if I feel she is in pain. And he gave me vitamin c stuff to put in their water which I haven't done yet and I'm not sure I will as I don't want it to affect the taste and then put her off water! She seemed perfectly happy at the vets but then she goes all quiet when we get home but I suppose that's to be expected with a middle ear infection. He also took a swab for her ear and checked it under a microscope and said there was no ear mites or eggs!

Her poops are still soft but much better shape than they were yesterday. He didn't give me anything for her guts at the moment as she is still eating and passing poops.

All sounding good! This vet is clearly covering all the bases!

Don;t put VitC in the water bottle- either dissolve it in a small quanitty of water and syringe feed (or mix it directly with any miushed pellets or critical care she is being given atm)

If the metacam doesn't cut the mustard in terms of pain relief you may have to go back and ask for a stronger painkiller to keep her eating - (i.e. buprecare or tramadol - I can provide vets contact details to your vet if they are not sure about these meds)

Most importantly - keep food going in and poops coming out!

Thanks :) I am not having to give critical care or mushed pellets at the moment. Her weight is stable so she must be eating enough. Although I don't seem to see her eating as much hay/pellets as I'd like but shoukd she be ok as long as she's not losing weight? She is more interested in chewing on a piece of toilet roll tube! And I haven't put anything in the water!

Great - keep the toilrt roll tubes coming....a bit of newspaper of kitchen roll wouldn't go amiss either.
This does suggest she has digestive issues and need more fibre to get her guts going.
She may need a gentle course of gut stimulants to help her through - so please keep an eye on her poop output in terms of frequency and size and her wieght...and if concerned please go back to your vet for the gut stimulants

Ok that's good to know. I always put in multiple pieces of toilet roll tube and there is newspaper under the hay area who h I've seen her nibbling on. I didn't realise they could eat kitchen roll! I will do. Thanks :) x

I have been so pleased with Daisy today. She has been up and about loads more during floor time and pestering Maple trying to eat her poops, as well as her own poops :))
Her poops are looking much better, no longer soft and although they are still not a perfect shape, they are getting there so gave her a little veg and a very small amount of grass tonight. She has started wheeking again and which is great as she stopped doing then when she lost her cagemate this year so I'm happy :D
She has been taking her meds and probiotic very well and we have to continue with the baytril until Friday but here's hoping it's onwards and upwards :D

So today, Daisy is more fluffed up than she was yesterday :( She is still active but not as active as she was yesterday but she still comes running over getting excited for some veg. Her weight remains stable although I have not seen her eat much hay/pellets today. Is she fluffed up due to pain? I am still giving 0.2ml metacam daily. Should I be concerned or just carry on as I have been doing?

The fluffing up indicates a higher level of pain. You can safely double the dose for a short period of time, but if issues persist, please contact your vet.

You might see a drop ion weight tomorrow, as it takes time for the guts to process any incoming/not incoming food. If in doubt, please offer hand feed in order to top her up. Loss of appetite or choosiness in what they eat is often connected with pain.

That's a pity, I thought the metacam was controlling the pain well. So I should give another 0.2ml today and see if that helps?

I would give 0.2ml 12 hours after the last dose and see how that goes. Is she on metacam once or twice daily? Generally, it is better to split the metacam, as guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism.

Hopefully, it is just a hitch, but if the pain is getting worse, it would be best of you spoke to your vet again.

Ok that's what I'll do and if she is still as fluffed up by tomorrow I will give the vet a call. Thanks.

Looking for some more advice today please.

Daisy has been loads better. Not fluffed up anymore and a lot more active in her cage and floor time. We are continuing Baytril and phoning the vet on Tuesday to update him. However. Her weight has now dropped a bit. She is still eating well. Could this just be a delayed weight loss from when she didn't seem to be eating great through the week? Or perhaps as she is now more active? Or maybe I'm clutching at straws. Anyway her weights the past few days are:
9th April - 1141g
10th April - 1134g
11th April - 1097g
12th April - 1072g

When I first took her to the vet he said he wouldn't be too concerned about her weight unless she dropped below 1kg but I am concerned! Do I need to start hand feeding or just continue monitoring closely?

It is great that Daisy is a lot better in herself again!

If you are worried, you can start offering her some additional hand feed after her normal dinners, just to top her up. There is a clear downwards tendency, but it is nowhere near a worrying amount yet, so please don't panic.

Thanks a lot :)

Another update on Daisy's ear infection. We stopped the Baytril last Thursday and the vet examined her ear. He said there is still a bit of wax in there which could encourage bacteria to grow resulting in another infection. He gave me ear drops to put in after a week so I'm going to do them today. He said there is a risk of the ear drops going in too far though and potentially causing another infection so I'm quite wary! But then if I leave it, that could also cause an infection.

The ear drops are otoclean drops. Has anyone used these before?

Daisy is acting normally today but when she sits down to relax she appears quite fluffed up. However, when she is on the go the fluffiness kind of disappears. I know this can indicate pain so I'm concerned the infection is still there. Think I will give the vet a ring.

Best of luck! Ear infections can be tenacious.
