Ted has mites and we've been treating him but he keeps scratching him self and making himself bleed and it's seriously scaring us... He's squeaking with pain and keeps hurting himself...

Can anyone tell us what to do to stop him scratching? We've been putting Aloe Vera gel on his wounds and giving him vitamins in his water..

Uhm... What other info...

We just cleaned up the blood with sterile water. It seems that he doesn't scratch when we're holding him.

Anything else we can do?

it must be awful, sorry i dont know what to do but i am sure someone will come along soon and help, good luck!:rose

Have you been given any medication to give him? If he hasn't seen a vet yet, please take him to one. Good luck xx

Well, we actually got him from the vet. He'd been given to her by a lady who, I guess didn't wnat a guinea pig with mites. She let them get so bad that he's bald on his back and scabbed all over so we rescued him. He was given vitamins for his water which we are using ut he doesn't seem to be drinking and a cream to put on him, whihc we haven't been doing because we were advised by the people hee not to put it on open cuts (it's a steroid and antibiotic) so we were putting aloe vera gel on, but we think that's making him itch worse.

We''re most likely going to trake him to the vet on Monday but if anyone has any suggestions to keep him pain-free and our minds at rest until then, please...

I'm really sorry to hear about little Ted :(
I hope you can get this sorted out quickly mites can be very painful and cause them a lot of stress :...
Personally i'd be going back to vets and asking for medication.

Firstly, has Ted been examined by a veterinarian?

Secondly, have you visited the Gorgeous Guineas website?

Naturally, ensure Ted's nails remain short. However, you may cover the wounds, for example, with a sock. Naturally, you should ensure that the material is a snug fit, but not to tight.

Thanks
He has been seen by a vet and we're thinking of seeing her again soon.
We've ordered some things from GG's but they haven't arrived yet..

Hmm... His nails are quite long but he is so jumpy and skittish and terrified of everything I really don't think he's let us cut them. Maybe the vet can.

Covering the wounds sounds like a good idea... Thanks

He may need antibiotics so seeing your vet would be a good idea. he last thing you want now is for his cuts to get infected :( Well done for adopting him though xx

I hate that this happens on Saturday night!

Antibiotics, yes, but I'm not happy about applying it to open wounds.
We were thinking of those little files you get for babies to stop their cuts getting infected, but again, it's Saturday night now.

Thanks, he stole our hearts <3

Yeah, the mites are pretty bad. I'm so glad that we took Figgy to the vet sooner rather than later, or he would have turned out like Ted.

Well, again, it's Saturday night. Monday morning he'll be down there.

Unfortunately, it is a case of 'I must only be cruel, to be kind'. I do hope Ted makes a full recovery soon.

Talk to him the whole time you're doing it, reassuring him....i know he may not like it, but if it helps.........

Hi sorry to hear Ted is in pain. You can put plasters over both his feet to prevent him doing damage to the wound for now. Please contact Laura at the guinea pig helpline, she should be able to help you with suggestions for his discomfort. If you got him from the vet in the first place and he didn't suggest any treatment then I'd take him to a different vets that is more piggy savvy. Where are you located?
See www.guineapighelpline.com for Laura's details. It's quite late but I'm sure she wouldn't mind a text. Put the plasters on for now to help with the scratching x

In my experience, it is typically either easier, or harder than you originally thought. However, as I mentioned previously, ensure that the wound cover is neither too loose, nor tight, and I would also recommend that you have a secondary wound cover to be able to change the wound cover every so often. Naturally, use a material which will not irritate Ted's wounds further.

I would also recommend that he is only bedded on paper.

Well, we're in France so texting that number would be...
Our vet, I trust her very much. He was really doing well until he just pulled off those scabs.
It's not really his feet, mostly his mouth that he's using.

We don't have any paper bedding... Here it's past midnight.

My mum doesn't want to put a sock on him at the moment. We're going to leave him alone for a bit, and if he goes through the night, then that's good, but if he's still bleeding in the morning we'll cover him. We don't want to stress him out to much, and sometimes the more you fiddle, the worse you make things.

Thanks for your help/ advice <3

Well I suppose it depends how much you want to help your pig and quickly. A text is probably only 1euro at most! You can email Laura too though but probably won't hear from her tonight. A sock seems the best option, or a tubigrip, not too tight. Hope he's ok x

Oh my! Naturally, if Ted was a dog, cat, or larger animal, an Elizabethan Collar would be recommended. However, I not sure this would be appropriate for a cavy. . .
