He called back and said it wouldn't be related. To carry on the drug and collect urine sample and take back to first useless vet.

The web says it causes bleeding and you guys have loads of experience but it's falling on deaf ears vet wise!

My exotic veterinary texbook actually says you can use ceporex, i guess because its not in the group of amoxacillins. But to be honest it really wouldnt be first choice for any vets i know. Its hardly ever used in piggies (i guess for the reason many have said). Your piggie needs some Septrin (Trimithoprim) really this is great for any UTI's.

Please just change vets. They sound stupid.

x.

I suspect they will all say the same as everyone of them tonight has. Got to collect his wee and take it tomorrow.

Emergency vet says if he seems ok in himself then he doesn't need to go tonight.

I can highly recommend Jenny Towers at Active Vet Care in Tilehurst, she is very cavy savvy. They do not run an emergency out of hours service hence the problems you're getting, they're part of a group of vets. I would suggest not giving any more of the antibiotics you've got and phone them first thing in the morning. If you can't get in with Jenny then see Sally who is also very knowledgable. I would also mention the problems with the advice given by the emergency line.

Jenny will get a urine sample so don't worry about trying to get that tonight.

That's great. Think I will cut my losses with current vet and see this one then.

I'll let you know how I get on :) x

Just another thought, take everything your last vet gave you with you to show her, medicine and paperwork it may help her to know exactly what's been given.
You're in good hands with Jenny. I think she's in surgery on Thursdays so it may be worth calling just before 8.30am when they open to see if she can get you in first thing.
Let us know how you get on.

OMG i've just caught up with your thread 8...:...8...:...
I'm so sorry that you've been treated like this %&*(#_%^#(*%&# (that's me swearing!)
Thank god for everyone on here to pickup on the fact that drug is not recommended!

My normal vets called my OH and said they'd give them both another med so we decided to do that. They're on Baytril for 5 days.

Piglet is weeing less blood by the looks of it and I'm taking him out to make sure he drinks regularly.

Percy had now recognised food bag noises and was wheeking soooo loud! That's the first time he's done it and it was so cute!

They seem fine....eating and playing and I'm keeping a close eye on them.

I appreciate why you have decided to go this route. It's interesting thought that the vets took the trouble to ring you and offer you an alteranative this morning once they had read the "night records"?

I had hoped that at least your current vets (or the one's you were going to see in Tilehurst) would have the confidence based uon the evidence of your piggie's current condition to fill in an adverse drugs report.

By accepting this compromise, (which as I said I completely understand why you have) unfortunately your vets are being let off the hook of helping allpiggies everywhere in terms of vets prescribing an off-license medicaton that is really not suited for guinea pigs....

I hope you can have a sensible conversation with them and encourage them to file an adverse reactions report.

Dont get me wrong..this is not about fingering your vet....it is about vets having the courage to file these reports without feeling threatened with negligence lawsuits from the pet owners such as yourself. Unless they file these reports, more piggies will continue to suffer this reaction (and die).

Perhaps you could ask if your vets willing to talk to someone (ie me) whose only interest is ensuring this drug is no longer recommended for pigges on oral dosage and who needs vet surgeons statements as back up if I am to succeed?

Glad (and relieved) to hear your piggies are doing grand!

Hi

Last night we were completely given the run around and it was quite hard and scary to be in a position that felt helpless.
I woke up this morning fully expecting to be going to Tilehurst and hopefully being told that our current vet had acted wrongly. Even though several emergency vets last night told me my vet had not done anything wrong.

When my OH called me about our current vet, I could only assume it was the result of calling their own out of hours guy last night who was quite abrupt about how even though it was an unlicensed drug, it was safe to use and unrelated to the bleeding. At the end of the day I had explained that I was concerned about giving that med to my piggies after speaking to you guys and he kinda scoffed at the notion. Kinda like 'well who is the vet here', which I had expected.

I kinda felt that you guys may have thought I did the wrong thing and should have gone to Tilehurst which I can understand. But considering my piggies seem great I'm themselves, were going to be prescribed the correct med (which I knew now thanks to the forum) and I planned to give a urine sample from Piglet to them, or whichever vet we had chosen, to be sure what we are dealing with.

I completely appreciate all the advice and help on here. I hope you will understand the decisions made this time around. And although I mentioned cost the other day, this was not a reason why I didn't change vets. At the time I was just annoyed that they took my money just to cause me stress.
Vets bills were considered before the purchase of my animals and cost is not an issue. I'd rather have piece of mind than save some money.

I am happy to disclose in PM the details of my vets if it will be handled well and positively. I do not want anyone else to be caught out like we were and their animals to suffer. It was only by chance I decided to mention the drug name on here....I almost didn't think to! Things could be a whole lot different now!
We will probably still be dealing with this vet, at least for the very near future, and so I'd like that kept in mind. The guy last night already made me feel like an overreacting idiot and I sent my OH to pick up the med tonight.

I'm not an expert as this us my first time looking after GPs. However, I am carefully monitoring the situation and if I need to do anything differently like change vet then I will do.

Thanks again. X

I'm not sure this is the case as Piglet had been given it a week or so before. It was more likely the Emergency guy last night. Although he didn't take my name, he did ask which 'branch' I had been to.

Maybe he was concerned I was slagging off his company to a whole Internet forum and thought he should change the med?!

so relieved to here both Piglet and Percy are doing fine x)
and that little Piglet isn't weeing blood anymore!
I hope you can resolve with them the fact that they were doing more harm to your precious boy than helping!
More healing wheeeeeeeeeky loves from the girls and I XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks Glynis. There is still blood but no where near as much x
