Ok my guinea peps has been ill for about 5 days now. The first 3 days he would not finish all of his veg (kale carrots) and he was extremely quite.

Since then he hasnt ate or drank any water unless we have forced him too at first. Now he gets very stressed out. He hasnt had a poo or a wee for about 2 days either.

We took him to the vets and they said he has gastritis which is an inflammation of the stomach so we are now giving him medication a liquid medicine 3 times a day to help the natural motion of his tummy. Hes still not better and t hat was yesterday morning.

His eyes are becoming lifeless and when i stroke him hes shaking with fear.!

I dont want to loose my piggy! Please someone try to give me anymore help of what i could possibly do or if anyone else has had a piggu this poorly

I have been told by the vets to take him in on friday to see how he is doing

when they checked him they checked everything.

In your post you said his eyes are becoming lifeless and he is shaking with fear...this is not a good sign....the shaking could be a fit...

I know you took him to the vets already, but Friday is 2 days away..piggies can go downhill very quickly.

If it was my pig and he hadnt peed or pooed for 2 days I would be taking him back to the vet. If you took him to the vet yesterday morning, then I would think that you would start to see some improvement today.

There are a lot more experienced owners on here, hopefully one of them can give you some advice.

Good luck, hope he gets better

.

Thankyou.

He has literally jsut came out of his house cleaned himself and went back in. I cant afford an emergency vet tonight so i am going to have to call the vet in the morning and nurse him tonight.

I do not think its gastritis i googled it and there was hardlies anything about guineas having it.

I'm really sorry but i dont know what to say, i would properly take him to the vet or can you call them? good luck though :rose

aw bless him, has he eaten anything?

Was it an exotic vet that you took him to?

can you give us any more info? - How old is he? Any previous health issues? Could he have eaten something poisonous?

If he hasnt pooed or weed or eaten for 2 days he will more then likely be in gut statis.... Gut statis is a major killer in pigs...
He needs medical treatment asap...
Most vets will let you pay the bills off little by little...
I have had over £400 of vet bills this last month and I have no Money...

To tide him over till you get him to a vet try and crush some pellets up and mix with water to make a paste... Try and either syringe or spoon feed him...

But I wouldn't bother trying to feed him personally I'd be in the car and on the way to the vets... Phoning them as I was traveling...
he really needs a vet ASAP...

more info

he is 7 in November. I rescued him 2 years ago. I dont know any younger health problems.

he has always been a happy healthy piggy.

He usually gets Kale and carrots red cabbage (once). And fresh eating hay. He gets changed every day. As he always uses the toilet loads.

He is on guinea pig nuggets which he usually finises off alot.

He has vitamin c in his drinking water which is changed everyday.

He has had a tiny nibble off grass today. he wont touch anything else.

he had a pea sized poo yesterday that was it and a tiny wee.

His eys arnt big and buljing out like normal. they are very weak. he always runs when we go to pick him up he doesnt even fight us off.

He now has a green beard from his medication. He was chantering his teeth an awefull over the past 2 days but is very quiet today xx

Awwww:( 7 is a great age.

Teeth grinding/chattering can mean many things, including a sympton of pain.

Does your vet have an out of hours phone number so that you can call and speak to someone?

,,

I do.

He never mentioned that this is a fatal illness and can be severe and painful. I will be sueing him if anything happens to him.

I am very annoyed and upset at the same time. I dont want to see him in pain. Maybe i should try to mash some nuggets and give him them?

Yes try and get him to eat something.

Mash the pellets up with some warm water, when they are cold try and see if he will eat it off a spoon of not you may have to syringe it into his mouth.

There are some threads on here about syring feeding and critical care, probably in the "health & Illness" section.

Give the vet a call too, just to speak to them. It is the best thing to do for him.

As others have said, you need to see a vet ASAP.

It sounds like he's in pain, and dehydrated. Also as others have said, gut stasis is a killer.

You won't be able to sue anyone if you don't actually go to the vet...

I know you've been once, but he needs to be seen again. Now.

In my opinion teeth grinding is a bad sign, I'm no expert but I think it means pain. Go to someone else and get a second opinion from a different vet if you're not sure, when my Pickles was poorly I went to two vets and found one much more helpful than the other. Thinking of your little wheeker..get well soon :(

.

Ive gave him the last dose of his medication for today. I am monitering him over night. Hes had a roam around. And hes even snuggled right into me for about 10 minutes. If he is still the same in the morning I'm taking him straight to the vet.

..

i have been up tossing and turning with him all night iv'e been so worried. He is going back to the vets today where i am complaining about the lack of informationt hey gave me and i would like to see someone else at the practice,

As well as that there is no change. He has ate nothing his beds completly bone dry and no poo. So as soon as 9oclock comes I'm going to the vets. I dont care how much it cost ill do anything i can for my piggie even pay it off bit by bit. I want to save my piggle!

I'm counting down the clock right now just want 9am to hit so i can get him down. My vets in 5 minutes away. I just hope they can help him. If they can't i am blaming the vet for the first time i seen him about 2 days ago saying he was ok and its was just gut stisis.

I'm sorry, I've tried to hold my tongue (or fingers) but I can't.

You cannot blame the vet.

If the vet said it's gut stasis, that's serious. There is no "just" gut stasis.

The vet can only do the best they can, with the observations they make at the time.

When he deteriorated further (i.e. sunken eyes, teeth chattering) he should have been seen again immediately (as several people advised) and then the vet would be able to re-evaluate what was going on with him.

Vets are not miracle workers. They aren't mind readers. They can only go by what's exhibited and when things change, they need to be informed.

All this talk of blaming the vet and suing the vets - do you realise what your vet went through to get there to help animals like Pepsi? 20 years of education MINIMUM every day, from the age of 4 years old. A minimum of 5 years at university with huge fees. Every summer "holiday" spent working unpaid as a student vet, through the day and night.

But that's ok, because they're a vet and vets earn loads, right? Nope! There is no money in being a vet, contrary to popular belief. I personally will be coming out of university, after 10 years of university education at a total cost of £150,000+, to become a vet earning £22,000 a year if I'm lucky. Vets work long hours (e.g. an on call weekend shift will easily be 60 hours on duty), for very little pay.

So I'm sorry that your little Pepsi is unwell, and I genuinely hope that he makes a full recovery, but please, stop the talk of blaming vets, sueing people etc. If they make a mistake through negligence, fine, but when they're just trying to do their job (and by the sounds of it, doing it reasonably well), cut them some slack. Having a sick pet is stressful for you, but it's also stressful for the vet if they cannot work out what's going on.

My boys and girl send nose snuffles and wheeks to Pepsi.

to be fair the vet said he was ok to go home. And then go back on friday, Today was the only day i have been able to take him back. And i got him in a 9am. I'm so stressed at the moment so i am not even going to let this esculate into an argument when really you dont know whats going on apart from what has been said. And the vet did not give me the right information he was suppost to give me thats why he is a vet. They are suppost to explain and tell me what care i should be giving him. I understand your just stating a point. But all i really care about it getting my piggy back to full health. But what i need to understand also is he is getting old now. And i cannot help nature all i can do is anything i can to help him. The vet said he wasnt in any pain so calling them out would have been a waste of time. But he is safe now. He is getting treatment. I shall update you when he comes home and thank your girls and boys for wheeks

Hope your piggie gets better soon. I am assuming he has been left at the vets for treatment? Have they said what they are going to do? x

thankyou
