I'm no expert but from what I've seen around here it is extremely widely used amongst pigs....in fact I think it's probably the most widely prescribed painkiller for guinea pigs.
I thankfully have a very cavy savvy Vet and she has prescribed it for my pig.
If you can find a Vet that you can feel confident in, then swap as soon as you can. I did this recently, as mine was useless, and only wish I'd done it sooner.
Garry has trouble with arthritis (as well as having had an abscess and poorly teeth and a poorly bum!) and Simon has told me to keep him on it for the rest of his days. It acts as a painkiller and also as an anti inflammatory. It is the 1.5mg/ml oral suspension for dogs and Garry has 0.1ml per day.
Really don't know what I was thinking as I know full well that Septrin is an antibiotic. I'd hate to mislead/misinform anyone. Had a lengthy coversation about Septrin earlier this evening so I obviously had Septrin on the brain and my brain turned to mush! No excuses though...really sorry....clearly I shouldn't post when I'm super tired! mallethead
Just wanted to add my thoughts on here too, Metacam is certainly safe but obviously used only when necessary as with other drugs, and care should be taken with pigs with kidney impairment - as with other drugs. As far as I know (from five years forum experience and my own experiences) it is the most widely prescribed painkiller for guinea pigs among vets, although most rodentologists will also vouch for Rimadyl. I've had quite a few pigs on Metacam for one problem or another!
At present I am unsure of the Metacam for dogs/cats differences, obviously the concentration is different, once I've digested them I'll note the dosage difference.
