Our little piggy Huxley seemed a bit quiet this evening - we've had a look at him and he is making some wheezy chesty noises - he is still popcorning and eating but I don't want him to deteriorate before we can get him to the vet.
We have some Baytril downstairs for our rabbit's skin infection - should I give Huxley 0.1mls tonight? (he is about 3months old)...

Katie, poor Huxley, I'm so sorry he's wheezing, I'm afraid I wouldn't know what the best course of action would be or a minimum age for antibiotics, sorry Katie :-\ Has he just started wheezing this evening do you think?

Yes, he was racing round before and playing with his ball, thats why we had a look at him becasue he seemed a bit quieter than usual ... I just don't want him to get worse in the night. :'( I couldn't bear to lose another little one.

Hope he is ok Katie. Sounds like a URI. I'm sure I have read it can only be used on adult pigs because it can alter growth patterns in young pigs.

Have a look at this link http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_enrofloxacin.html Maybe google it and get some info.

Sorry I can't help much. Really need to brush up on medications.

Get well soon Huxley you gorgeous thing! :smitten:

They can go down hill quick can't they? Cuzzy did on the Monday he was ok, quiet but eating, the next day was a different matter. I'd get him there as soon as you can. :)

Aw hope he is Ok,
Sending good luck
You could try to phone vet for advice on emergency number.

Tracy x

Aw thanks so much Glynis, I don't want you to go to any trouble! If we get him to the vets first thing would that be OK? he is breathing OK now, the occasional snotty snuffle, just worried about him. I checked Guinealynx and it said Baytril wasn't a good idea for little pigs.

I've just spoken to the girls at the vet they'll check it out...... they said usually they don't give anti's that young.
Also it would depend on weight as well. Perhaps some hot steamy water near the both of you whilst he's on your lap mightn't hurt too much, you know how if you're in the shower it helps your breathing? well i'd try that rather than the drugs O0 but they're going to call me back as soon as Brendan is out of consult O0
Good luck :smitten: :smitten: special healing wheeks for Huxley :-* :-* :-*

Just checked on him - he is sleeping, just made a couple of little clicking noises but otherwise was breathing OK. I have put a dollop of Vicks on a tissue on the floor by his cage - it might help him breathe. I remember someone said to try this when our little Fuzzy was poorly.

(and we are leaving he heating on overnight)

awwwww bless him he's probably a bit tired too, as you can imagine with any breathing problems it's exhausting :( :(
Sleep dreams Huxley :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
For peace of mind i'd check him thru the night also love O0
I'll be around for awhile so you can always chat to me i'll keep you awake i'll bore you to tears with jokes or whatever if you like :D :D :D :D

Aw thanks Glynis! I won't be able to sleep properly so will be checking on him. He was bouncing around at tea time and always takes himself off to bed at 10pm on the dot.
Will keep checking on him, thanks again!

Julie just told me about Huxley - I hope he's feeling better, good luck at the vets. I'm sure he'll be okay :)

Katie the vets gave Sephy 0.1mls of baytril once daily for a URI when she was 3 months, she only weighed about 450g aswell, not sure if they should have though it did work. hope they can give him something and he gets better soon xxxxxx

hoping little huxley is fine today, have only just logged on and seen this post. hoping things went well at the vets. sending hugs and kisses to you and little huxley(lovely name) and hope the wee one get's better real soon! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi All,
He seems OK, but still doing the occasional sneeze and clicking sound, but he is munching away at his cereal and hay.
Am going to call the vets soon t try and get him seen first.

Thats good to know about Sephy Emma, I have been panicking about the baytril as it didn't help our other little pig Fuzzy.

Thanks for asking after him, will let you know how he goes but he doesn't seem to be too bad this morning. (Can they fight it off themselves?)

Oh he sounds like a real little fighter YAYYY Huxley :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: (btw did you know Niki has a Huxley also :smitten:)
I'm sorry i've never had one with a cold so i can't help with knowing if they can fight it themselves :-\ :-\
Have a good chat with your vet when you speak to them and when you go O0
Healing wheeks and loves to the little guy :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Did you get some sleep love? i looked out for you all night but i didn't see you on.... i was hoping that meant a good sign and seeing what you've posted yes it is a good sign O0 :) :) :) :)

Hi Glynis,
Thanks for that, I hope he is ok.
I didn't sleep very well! I was going to leave the PC on but the powercable is a bit dodgy so we turned it off. I checked on him in the night though. Just hope the vets can fit him in early.

If they can't love i'd ask them for some advice to help reassure you till you get in :)
If ever i can't get in early i ask the girls what should i do? and they always are helpful i'm sure you'rs will be that way also :)
You poor thing i didn't think you'd sleep :( :( :( ((((((((((HUGS)))))))))) for you love O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Got an appt in 50mins. One thing - could it be mites? I heard that can cause cold-like symptoms - I have checked him over a few times as he was scratching quite a bit but haven't seen any scabs so far..

Good luck Katie, hope he is ok. Not sure about mites, Cuzzy had them and never displayed cold symptoms. keep us posted! x

Good luck at the vets Katie and Huxley.
