My elderly female pig has become rather withdrawn and lethargic, and can't walk straight without severely shaking whilst doing so. She doesn't seem very responsive to me and will just lay still for ages. I'm really concerned as she's getting old and seeing her suffer is horrible. I've wrapped her in a blanket but unsure of what else to do. Any advice and help is appreciated

Which country are you in?

Please contact a vet as soon as possible. It is likely that she has had a stroke, but it can also be an ear infection or a neurological problem.
Here is our piggy savvy UK vet locator: Guinea Pig Vet Locator

I would get her seen by a vet as soon as you can. They may be able to treat whatever is wrong, and if not talk you through the kindest options for her. Is she eating and drinking ok?

I'm going to get her to the vet first thing in the morning, I've checked on her again and she looks little better, has her head up and looking around a bit.
If it is a stroke, is there a chance of recovery and would she be on meds?
She seems to be eating and drinking ok, not as much as usual though
Thanks!

They can recover after a stroke but the first 48 hours are usually crucial. I am not sure about medication, the vet would be able to advise on that. My friend also gave her pig water therapy after his stroke which helped with his movement and I can talk you through that if the vet confirms a stroke.

I was away when it happened, my mum was looking after her for a few days. I'm not too sure when she had it. I hope we haven't missed the crucial time.
That'd be good, I just hope it's an ear infection rather than a stroke.

Could be anything but the important thing is to keep him warm a get him to a vet asap ,
When you phonTell the vet exaly what the conition is , and that he could need hydration fluids

Please keep her warm. See if you can syringe her a very small amount of sugary water into her. Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), can cause weakness and wobbling so to rule this out please try the above.

Wobbling can be any number of things. Please telephone an emergency vet tonight to get some advice even if you do not take her.

Hope she picked up soon.

Sorry to hear your special girl is unwell. Sending you *healing hugs* for her.

Obviously because you can tell she is not herself and is unwell the best thing to do is take her to your vet. They are trained to be able to diagnose and give advice as to how best to deal with the problem and to ensure that she is not suffering in any way.

No-one can properly diagnose what is wrong with her without seeing her in person and from there they will be able to advise you as to what needs to be done for her.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

She passed away last night, cuddled up with her sister. I think she went while she was sleeping, and she looked relaxed and peaceful. She was 6 or 7 and I think it was her time to go, and I'm glad she's not suffering anymore.
I'm worried about Marmite now, I hope she'll be ok without her

I am so sorry for your loss. At least she went peacefully cuddled up to her sister.

Big hugs to you and Marmite

I know there are threads on the forum to help you deal with the loss of your piggy and how best to help Marmite.

I will tag @Wiebke for you and she will be able to supply the links.

Popcorn free now little one xx

I am ever so sorry, but it sounds like she had a peaceful passing, which must be a real relief for you. Any change of surroundings or routine can sadly tip an already frail piggy with an underlying issue over the edge. it is just bad luck and nothing you can do about.
You are welcome to post a tribute in our Rainbow Bridge section if and whenever it feels right for you.

Here are our tips on what you can do for Marmite. if you please gave us a more realistic location, we could help you better with local recommendations. Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig
