Had all 3 guinea pigs out this morning, all approx. 4 months old, and they seemed fine. Left the room for 5 minutes, came back and realise there are little blood spots all over the carpet. All seem happy, no worrying signs of dominance; then spot Fred in the corner, not seeming angry or anything but just a little quiet in the corner, and realise he's bleeding somewhere from his foot but can't get hold of him to see! I've managed to scoop him into a travel box for the vet now with some hay and things to burrow under, he really seems perfectly happy, although he's tracking blood everywhere. Before I caught him, if left to his own devices he would happily munch on some hay and seemed to have no problem with the other two guinea pigs - they're all boys, about 4 months old and have shown some grumpy-teenager vibes towards one another but nothing worrying. Should I leave Fred to recover on his own or take him to the vet? Does this look like a fighting thing or maybe just an accident?

Where is the blood coming from on the foot? I would clean the wound with boiled water allowed to go tepid mixed with sea salt. And apply some pressure to stop the blood. Has one of the. Bitten him?

Hi there, thanks for the advice! He hadn't been bitten I don't think; they've shown no signs of aggression towards one another, only dominance, and they were all happily pottering around and eating together. I just got him back from the vets and she said he'd pulled one of the nails out (ouch!) but that it wasn't from a fight, more likely he just caught his nail in something. She cleaned it up and said just to keep an eye for swelling over the next few days but should be fine and will heal up on its own. He seems happy now if a little grumpy for the disturbance, and is back in with the other two now hiding in his cave :)

Thanks everyone! I was so worried when I saw blood all over the carpet, but he's happily bustling about and eating hay with Cornelius and Delbert now; happy little gents! :)
