URGENT please help - mites!

My guineas have just been to the vets a few days ago for treatment of mites. I noticed something on one's nose, it looked like a pellet or bit of poo stuck to her nose, so I gently pulled it off. her nose started bleeding slightly so I rubbed some of the mite cream on it. Is this ok or should I go to the vets?
 
one the vet gave me. It's called Fuciderm. when should i go back to the vet's for a second treatment? she gave them an injection to kill the mites last time i was there but said i would need a second one.

when did you last go?
has your guinea will need 3 injections or the drops every 7to 10 days for 3 treatments
the only fuciderm i have herd of was a antibiotic steriod cream not a mite cream..
also has she been treated for lice has the ivomec injection wont kill the lice
i buy xenox from the vets to treat lice x
 
i know they dont have lice, just mites. I last went on Friday and they got an injection so should I go next Friday for another injection?

Hmm maybe thats what it is, they have some awful patches on their skin and the cream is to clear that up I think. My vet is very rabbit-savvy but not sure if she's also guinea savvy she seems to know what shes doing though.
 
When my pigs had saracoptes mites they got an injection, and then another one 7 days later. One of them had scabs so the vet gave her an injection to stop the scratching, I think it was a steroid. So maybe your cream is to stop scratching/stop injection.

I'd call the vet and ask them when to bring her in :)
 
I'll ring the vets on Tuesday and ask when to bring them in (if i ring today or tomorrow i'll get through to the emergency clinic and my vet's get very snarky about me booking appointments in this way)

they will need to go back on friday and poss again the friday after xx

A bit like that. it was right on the top of her nose. what should i do if it is that? just rub on the cream I have? The link said its caused by poor quality hay, and this hay was just awful, it smelled of aniseed and was brown. I thought they would be better with that than with no hay at all, and it was just for a day until I could get a new bag :( I was so wrong. All the pet shops near me sell brown disgusting hay, what colour should it be?
 
Hay should be as green as possible but I agree with you that they'd be better with poor quality hay for a day or two than no hay at all.

Are you able to order off the internet? www.thehayexperts.co.uk and www.animalmagicpetsupplies.co.uk both sell a great range of hays. The favourite tends to be Oxbow but it is the more expensive brand (although very well worth it in my opinion!). There are plenty of other good hays out there too.

Fuciderm Gel contains the antibiotic fusidic acid and the anti-inflammatory steroid betamethasone; as such, I wouldn't recommend it for treating a condition such as cheilitis. I would try to stick with something natural like Galen's Garden Green Cream (available from Gorgeous Guineas or Galen's Garden websites) as it is said to be good for use around the eyes/nose/mouth.
 
thank you so much, I placed my first order with Hay Experts yesterday :)) was embarrassingly excited. I ordered some healthy treats for my buns and guineas, some rabbit food, and one of their hay samples, going to try and see what they like best. and some gorgeous guineas shampoo :)

what about johnsons tea tree cream?

It is ridiculously exciting ordering stuff for piggies, especially something as common as hay. :))

I tend to avoid the tea tree cream as there's debate over the safety of tea tree oil, particularly on broken skin. Aloe vera gel/ointment could help, but I mentioned the Galen's Garden Green Cream as it is apparently particularly useful where there are symptoms such as the ones you describe.
 
Update

I have Strikeback Hutch and Kennel Protector, Johnson's Cage and Hutch Spray for their hutch, and Johnson's Insecticidal Spray to put directly on them.

On the bunny forum I was told to avoid anything Johnson's, and use Beaphur instead. Has anyone ever used any of these products?
 
I have used beaphar and am vey pleased with it. Once your piggies have been given the all clear of mite infestation, use their spot on as a preventor. I have done this with my piggies. I noticed them scratching and dosed them all. Scratching levels dropped significantly ( they're bound have a scratch anyway it's nature).
 
You can't see mites. Vets vary with what they do. My vet got some cellotape, put it on the piggies to take a sample. Apparently better than a skin scrape. he then looked at the cellotape to see what he could find.

Beaphar spot on can be used as a preventor. The pigs don't have to get mites first, use the spot on to prevent another reinfestation.

I have used that spot on and it does work, worth doing on your pigs every 3 months or so as a preventative. Do it now to help and then again in a week or so.

I have an order coming from the hay experts at the mo (with garden galen cream) and I am also so very excited it's silly!

Do you bed your guineas on hay? If so you will need to find a good quality cheaper hay to bed them on as Oxbow is too dear to bed them on and change every day but GREAT as feed.
 
thank you, they are on Megazorb and hay, Ive started using Burns Meadow Hay for their bedding but they get Burgess Excel Dried Hay or Burgess Excel Forage to eat
