I don't keep guinea pigs and only know there basic needs.

My sister has two and I'm the first to admit she's not an ideal owner.

so she's not exactly clued up on health issues.

anyway one of them today has started foaming at the mouth and isn't very well at all, a normal skitty guinea pig its very timid today.

Its been to ther vets they say they dont know whats wrong but its been given an injection of baytril and an anti-inflamitry (she didn't ask what) she's also been given oral baytrill but only 0.2 twice a day? this seems low as i give my 300g rats that!

the vets just said bring it back on thursday if its not any better....

its not been eating since last night and seems to be constipated and straining to poop

i've taken down my heat pad and lots of yummys (baby food kale greens pepper) also some readi grass but i think its mouths to swollen to eat

the vet says its not in its lungs or anything.

i've managed to source some critical care as only 1 vets out of 4 in a 15mile radius had it but when i told my sister its £12 i got the feeling she won't pay that for it.

i've also told her to mush up some of its pellets with hot water so it can eat them easily.

this is as much as i know and can think of so any guinea pig people please please give me some ideas? feel free to cross post to a guinea pig forum as I'm not a member and dont know any good ones

Has the vet checked the mouth for rash/ulcers in mouth or throat (from food that has been too acid)or tooth trouble in the molars?

Any of these can cause so much pain and discomfort that a guinea pig will stop eating and drinking.

She said the vet tried to look in the mouth but it was to swollen

You can syringe feed Burgess Excel G.Pig pellets that have been mixed with hot water, then allowed to cool and mixed into a paste.
It costs about £5 for a few kilograms.
It is as good as CC at a fractionn of the cost.
The pig may have dental problems.
It does NOT need a general anaesthetic to have the teeth looked at or trimmed.

The pellets will be fine mushed up and syringe fed, but he needs to see a rodent person if you ring the cambridge cavy trust, they might be able to put you in touch with someone local, they helped me.

sadly shortly after i posted this my sister called and said he was taking a turn for the worse and was going blue etc, so i went down and got him and took him to the vets where they said the prognosis wasn't good, they said i could try oxygen therapy and see if it perked him up.

I went down to my sisters ten mins away and by the time i got there they called me and said they though it would be best to put him to sleep, so i went up and cuddled the poor little mite as my sister wasn't up to doing it.

rest in peace little man

Thank you all for your help

Very sad, but better they go quickly than get ill and struggle for days or even weeks, thats even worse for them and us:....
