I've finally managed to wrangle a prescription for septrin out of my vet and to order it at my pharmacy, only to be told that septrin has been discontinued when I went to pick it up today.

As I've got only about one dose left, I need your help to know what alternative antibiotic to to ask my vet for tomorrow.

Nerys has still got quite infected, smelly urine (but no sign of crystals or stones) and her cystitis is VERY stubborn.
PS: I'm doing exactly what I'm telling everybody else!

Other brand names of the same drug (trimethoprim sulfa) are Bactrim, DiTrim, Borgal, Tribrissen and SMZ-TMP (sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim).

Septrin is a brand name so hopefully you can still get the same drug, just a different brand!

Zithromax is one I keep forgetting but it sounds like it may be worth a try, what with this having gone on for so long. Sometimes these things can be so stubborn!

Hi Wiebke have you found an alternative? or would your vet give you zith?
Sending Nerys lots of kisses from us all and healing wheeeeeeks xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

I'm just getting ready to make a bus trip to the vets now to discuss your ideas with the small animals expert on the team; I've got an appointment with Carol for 11.20am.

Thanks for everybody's input!

My vet made a trip into their stores and came up with a nearly full bottle of septrin for me.

We checked the alternative forms of septrin (SMZ-TMP), but had trouble finding one that can be given orally.
My vet was reluctant to prescribe zithromax yet.

Thanks for your input; it was very useful!
