The approaching low - storm xavier - has been upgraded. An amber warning for hurricane force winds in scotland and the north coming down as far as Norfolk has been issued by the Met office. together with a yellow warning from Mids/Oxon/Bucks

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/...&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1386201600

More importantly, the Environment Agency this evening issued warning of the worst storm surge in 30 years along the eastern coasts including the Thames and Kent.

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/news/151065.aspx

Please note Scandinavia, Netherlands and N Germany are also on high alert and making preparations for the winds/storm surge.

Not a night for piggies to be outside if you are in the at risk areas. Stay safe everyone.

Don't know how I missed this. Was that preoccupied with it being a tad frosty. Thanks for the warning.

Please note:
a) winds will hopefully be short lived but are already lashing Scotland....this is a fast moving low pressure that suddenly "bombed" into a severe storm earlier this evening, hence why the short notice. Winds should hopefully clear by lunchtime tomorrow given the speed at which this is moving. Expect disruption in the amber warning area.
b) storm surges will occur at high tide and are forecast for midnight'ish thursday and friday lunchtime for low-lying coastal areas. Please keep checking for flood alerts/warnings on the EA website for your catchment area
Sandwich Quay in Kent is already on severe flood warning

Hopefully this will have passed by the time I start shift at 2 pm.

Jeeze us. I new nothing about this until I was at work overnight. Not long got home and it is bad here in Manchester especially where I live up in the hills!

Just been in the shed with the piggies and thankfully they're fine, dry and warm BUT I will be staying awake today on guard.

I have heard it will be moving Southwards so take care everyone. It is rather scary here at the minute :(

Just heard the traffic news, there are 2 articulated wagons blown over in the winds on my patrol route, so I might get called in early!

I'm on the east coast about an hour south of newcastle as the crow flies .... chaos this morning parts of trees blowing around, railway crossings all stuck dow, bins flying of their own accord down roads, barriers from roadworks flat all over ... piggies are safe though i checked them :-)

Mine are always safe, their shed is bolted to the ground and the roof is secured beyond secure. The door is bolted top and bottom and has a latch in the centre, so that's safe too. ;)

My hutch is bolted to the ground, the roof is 1 inch thick solid pine (makes it quite heavy anyway) and I went screw crazy when putting it on the hutch, the back is 1 inch thick ply, and the bedding areas are made from 1 inch ply its quite a heavy hutch. Its sheltered by 3 walls (two of which are 2 storey house height the other is 8ft) and its loosely sheltered on the other end by the other terrace of houses, our rows are like this |=| (two parallel rows with a perpendicular row at each end) and I'm on the = part so its pretty sheltered all the time. Plus they have 3 snuggle safes and their DIY cover on today.... doesnt stop me worrying about them being 20 miles away from me though

The weather here has been awful. I've been a bit naughty and taken the whole day off even though I should really go in this afternoon :shh::twist:

I'm now on my way in to work, fingers crossed for a stress free shift.

Stay safe everyone, keep your piggies safe too.
We have just had one almighty downpour of rain and the winds picked up and were really gusting too, never seen it like that before it was like a hurricane coming through.
I have just looked on the web at the news, and apparently it has blown caravans over in Scotland.

Oh my goodness! I have just seen my fence blown down and various flying objects around the garden. I would be so worried about hutches, I'm so glad the pigs are inside! I am off work as my daughter is poorly, but am very glad that I dont have to drive around in this high wind. However I am scared as my son is on a school trip, frotunately they wont be going on any motorways......

Re Storm surge. This is now a very serious threat.

Please take these warnings seriously and follow the advice of the EA and emergency services. Make sure all pets etc are protected and on higher ground if you are in an at risk area from the coast or tidal rivers. There are now 25 severe warnings for East Anglia...which means a danger to life so act now and be prepared to evacuate during daylight hours today
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx

Evacuations are now taking place in coastal East Anglia

The Thames Barrier is being closed at 10pm tonight to defend London

Stay safe everyone....please be prepared with torches/batteries etc and don't take un-necessary risks. All pets in flood risk areas should be crated/in carriers and on higher ground indoors tonight in case evacuation is required.

I am glad I am able to keep my guinea pigs indoors. They were outside initially but that was over 2 years ago - I got worried about high winds and decided to make room for them in the spare bedroom. As I am sat here there are 3 larch lap fence panels swaying around in the back garden threatening to take the only stable panel with them. But I am glad my lads are OK.

I have just read to above message. I hope everyone is safe there. Must be terrible weather and I thought it was bad here.

This is a serious issue as Pebble has made clear. There has been significant damage in Scotland with all rail services suspended, all large (Forth, Tay, Friarton etc) bridges closed to traffic. There has already been one death of a gentleman whose HGV was blown over. This is not a storm to be taken lightly.

Please make sure any hutches not bolted down are moved into shelter and if you are in a flood risk area as noted by the Environment Agency then please get you pets inside and onto higher ground before dark. The main surge will overnight so don't wait til it's here to make sure pets are safe.

Oh dear, sounds like the storm we had here was just building up to full power :(

From what I've heard it turned over taxis, lorries and other vehicles and blew in part of the roof of the central train station. And there were sirens going all morning.

Thankfully it seems to have passed over us relatively quickly. Hope everyone stays safe and it passes quickly for you too.

its times like this I hate being away from my pigs, they're over 3ft off the ground and its not even raining here but still. Hope everyone is safe and gets home safely later x

Yup. Its hiting Denmark Harshly! even worst than the last storm! We had to leave school a lesson EARLY.. if you were getting picked by car. But if you were cycling.. you were screwed - like i was.. I was going to leave around 1 (I was going to leave before, but i wanted to wish my class teacher happy birthday) BUT I LOST MY KEYS. GAH. So after 45 minutes.. of searching my friend found them ON MY BIKE. So i must have left them there the WHOLE day. And yeah. I also fell off my bike and hurt my knee whilst i was cycling in this.. hurricane wind. I heard its going to continue tomorrow, and if its really bad, our school will be closed. :btt: Anyway, I would also advise that if you keep animals outside, you should take them in as it wouldn't be pleasant for them:mal:

So I have lost a lot of tiles from my roof now, the fences have blown down and my double gates have been ripped off the posts. I'm so glad my horse is safe inside his stable and its a solid structure...

When I was very little we lived in Jaywick, and I can imagine just how bad it is there, the sea used to come over the wall and flood the roads.

stay safe everyone.

The storm is moving south and although we can still expect some strong gusts this evening, the main danger now is from the tidal surge/flooding due to take place at or before high tide tonight and lunchtime tomorrow. Low-lying coastal areas along the East Anglia and Kent coasts and those on tidal rivers are at risk of severe flooding and the EA are predicting that some defenses will be over-topped. Depending upon where you are on the coast the surge could be anything up to 9m high.

Please check the EA map to see if your area/property is at risk......go into the flood maps for your area which show the extent of those properties at risk:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx

There are 41 severe flood warning out across the country, 125 flood warnings and 76 flood alerts.
  • Severe flood warning = danger to life and property. Be prepared to evacuate if you haven;t already been told to do so by the authorities, move everything to higher ground and if possible go stay with relatives/friends. Turn off gas/electric/water before you leave.
  • Flood warning = flooding expected - take action - this warning may be upgraded at short notice during the night so ensure you are prepared to evacuate if necessary
  • Flood alert - risk of flooding. Be prepared
If your property is directly in the shaded map area of Severe Flood Warning you need to take action NOW to ensure the safety of yourself and your pets...which means first floor or above if you intend to stay put....but better if you can find somewhere safe to stay until tomorrow afternoon.

Wiebke has kindly started a new thread for quick reference to areas that are being/might be evacuated.
