Hope you can help, my guinea pig Ginge, did not eat his tea tonight and my husband has just been and tried to pick him up and he really really squeaked...and his tummy is swollen...we are looking for a vet at the mo in the paper but thought i would ask for help while my hubby is lookin..is there anything i can do in the mean time...? please help x

Could be bloat ? I don't know a great deal about it, so i'm just looking on here to see if i can find anymore info for you.

I know gripe water/infacol is good for this, but unless you have a baby you're not likely to have any in the cupboard !
You might be able to get it in a local Tesco Metro, or Spar though.

I'll keep looking and let you know if i find anymore info. There are lots of people who know more about piggies than me, so i'm sure they will reply soon.

Rach

I found this on here, under a thread called "bloated?" ...
If your piggie has got a touch of bloat crush a rennie up and mix with a small amount of water and then syringe the amount to your piggie. Leave for about 20-30 minutes and then massage the sides of the piggie's tummy and this should help.

Bloat is an acute emergency, it needs immediate treatment. See pm.

I can see Alcesterpigs is logged on - she normally knows lots about health issues - so hopefully will reply to you soon.

Edited - sorry, i can see she already has!

Hope Ginge is doing ok

I have heard of this but didn't realise it was so bad for them... poor little mite.

"no worries" i am not sure but i think so.

totaly agree with what you said a very helpful person to know when it comes

to an unwell guinea pig!

thank you all...my hubby is on the way to alcesterpigs with his friend as i need to stay with the children. I'm shaking like a leaf x

Wow, excellent news - i'm sure Ginge will be in good hand. What brilliant use of the forum. AlcesterPig always seems to give excellent advice on here. (...and maybe your husband can let me know if he/she is a he or she!)

Maybe you need a cup of tea, and some chocolate now - there is nothing else you can do for the time being.

Joking aside - i hope you can help Ginge.

When this emergency is over maybe you could post us some more details on how to deal with bloat? I felt so useless earlier when i saw this post and i had no real advice to give.

Rach

Certainly sounds like bloat, it does come on so suddenly and can be awful to deal with. I hope AP is able to help little Ginge.

Ginge weighed 3lb 6oz and was 3 years old.
He showed no signs of bloat, ie no gut fluid nor gut distension.
He was unable to stand up on his back legs and, because his abdomen was resting on the floor, he gave an appearance similar to that of a pig with bloat.
His heart had a regular rythmn but was only beating at about 75% of the normal speed.
The strength of the heart-beat was below normal.
All of the signs indicated heart failure.
I gave him 10mg of Lasix in attempt to reduce the fluid on his lungs but his condition had deteriorated too far and he died very shortly afterwards, peacefully and in no pain.

Oh Amanda, I'm so sorry for your loss :'( Thank you for trying, alcesterpigs. May he rest in peace xxxxxx

So sorry that Ginge died! What a shock for you, Amanda!

Thank you all and especially to alcesterpigs who was amazing. Its been really difficult today, coming down and not giving ginge his normal morning cuddle and cucumber. Nugget (our other guinea) has been really quiet and keeps looking for his friend...it really breaks my heart! :0

Thank you all again for being so kind x

Ohh that's too sad, sorry to hear he didn't make it and hope Nugget is ok. Aww, poor you and poor piglet xx
