URGENT! whats the dose of sudofed?

Todd my boar is very crackly, he has had some calpol, bit of vick on his chest..

but whats the dose for sudofed? and how many times a day?

what else can i do?

he is eating and drinking and seeming bright in his self!

if i bring him in over night will his ladies still except him back?
 
0.2ml 2x daily is what I give of the Sudafed Expectorant, Claire.

If you've got any Baytril to hand, I would start him on that instead, I am not sure if both Baytril and Sudafed can be given together.

Fingers crossed for Todd, glad he is eating and drinking. He should go back with his girls just fine, I have had Dexter separate from three of his girls while he keeps Gwenny company, put him back with the others today, aside from being a tad frisky he settled down very quickly!
 
thanks laura i have baytril, septrin and azithromycin! which one do you think would be best? i know the does of baytril and septrim but not the azithromycin?
 
my piggie vet has given baytril for 'crackles' claire. Think the septrin is a bit too gentle to get on top of it i think never had the azy-thingymajig! :))x
 
lol, septum is good for water infections so not sure for chest problems, ive heard azithromycin great for chest problems, i have loads of un-made bottles here as my daughter has to have it ever 2 days for her chest:))
 
Antibiotic choice/effectiveness is about two things
a) spectrum of activity i.e how many types of bugs can they kill and
b) how effectively they can penetrate the areas where said bugs reside.

Baytril - is the ONLY med licensed for piggies hence is the one of choice for most vets as no risk to them. It IS a broad spectrum and kills most piggie pathogens...provided it can get to them

Septrin - similar spectrum of activity for bugs....not licensed for piggies. However septrin is logged as having a better penetrating power to tissues where baytril can;t and is better (and less gut-irritating) for long term treatment of chronic infections...which will be needed if the infection is "remote"......hence why it is preferred for bladders

Azithro - deffo not licensed...you will need a very open-minded vet to prescribe this one. It is however getting the thumbs up for chronic piggie infections - be they abcesses/URi or UTI. The side effects however could be a lot worse according to the literature....although here on the forum I have not noticed any adverse effects being reported.


There IS one other option that should be considered ...particularly relevant if the URI is mycoplasma. This is long-acting oxytetracycline given by injection. It's not toxic for piggies (it's different from normal teracycline) and worked a treat on Beechie with lymphadenitis/two abcesses in his mouth that wouldn;t respond to baytril

Personally in your situation I would opt for septin first and then move to azithro..(but only start the latter following a teleconflab with your vet to get their approval) .If neither work then oxytet..


My reasons.......you have a lot of piggies and have used antibioitics quite a lot to treat the various conditions of your housemates. It is highly likely that an antibioitic-resistant population may have developed in your herd (its' happened to me - staph and strep are resistant to both baytril and septrin...and in one piggie also oxytet.....eeeek!..)

Therefore given the situation - and taking into account the gut sensitivity effects as well...septrin over baytril....same sepctrum of activity but (allegedly) better penetrating power to the lungs

thanks pebble ive not used antibiotics much at all if any in my own guineas as touch wood this is the first illness i have had in my own guineas, a part from Ralphie last year following a neutering op which caused him infections..

Todd seems fine today the rattle has all gone, i gave him some sudafed plus some baytril, but i will switch to septrin today, i dont use antibiotics especially baytril if i can help it, as ive seen many gut problems in guineas on baytril even though they were having probiotics..

i also have about 6 bottles of azithromycin in which i could use one if needed, but what is the dose of it?
