I dont know if this is normal but my guinea pig has not toutched any of her hay or treats, and she just keeps on picking up her droppings and eating them?!

is this normal?...
 
erm....
as far as not eating her hay and treats... is she eating anything...? drinking anything...?
and yes... dont worrie about the poo eating... it freaked me out when my lot first did it...
haha...
they get some sort of goodness from it...
someone more "in the know" will be able to tell you more about that...

She hasnt been drinking or eating, shes just eating the poops and she seemes very sluggish, she keeps laying down alot x
 
I admittedly dont know much, but if she is sluggish, not eating and drinking and is very out of character I would take her to a cavi savi vet hun, best to get her checked out as noone here can see her x

right...
well... if i think any of my lot arnt eating... i pop their fav fresh food in the cage and watch from the other side of the room... dont be to close to them as a couple of mine are nervous eaters.... :)
try high water content food like cucumber or lettuce... romaine lettuce is meant to be one of the best...
give them a little while to see if they do eat it...
if they dont... i'd take them to the vets just incase of dehydration especially with the heat we've been having recently...

she may have a digestive problem if all she wants to eat is poo, if you really think she's not right maybe take her to the vets x
 
Yea, I'm off to pets at home in a minute to do some food shopping for them, i might take her up there and see what they can do?
 
i would count on pets at home for health advice hun, you should see the threads on here about them selling sick animals! i wont even shop there anymore, good luck with your pooey piggy x
 
what area are you in...?
if your anywhere near me i have a fantastic vet...
i'd use p@h as a last resort personally... but dont not get treatment becuase youve been urred away from there...
go there if you cant find any other vets...

Your Guinea Pig needs a VET - As it's Saturday there should be one open. Where are you, we can hopefully point you towards a Guinea Pig Savy vet.
 
the very fact you are asking if this is normal indicates its not. You know your piggies characters better than anyone else and if you think it may be out of the norm then I would get to a vet asap. Try and get one that deals with piggies regularly or at least has "exotics" listed in the yellow pages. There's a whole list on here, someone might be able to point you in the right direction or if you have a rescue nearby ask them who they use
 
Thanks guys! I've popped in some cucumber and she rushed to it and is gobbling or up, so she must be alright. I was only worried as she recently had a slight URI and she was put on some antibiotics for a week and now she's off, so I thought she was ill again! She's hiding in her tunnel eating at the cucumber atm, so I'm just gonna watch her, I live in stospley(nr hitchin) :) thanks for the advice xx
 
The antibiotics do suppress their appetite as I discovered to the stage where one of my boars would eat zero :)) Just keep a close eye on your piggy and try her with small tempting treats. Cucumber has very little nutritional value but anything is better than nothing - the fact that she is interested in food is a good sign.
She needs to be weighed as they lose weight so quickly and you can get a better idea of the situation.
Is she drinking ok ? Hydration is important too - I had to do critical care for my boy and was a complete wreck and novice at caring for a sick piggy but it all pays off in the end.
Hope she picks up very soon and keep us informed but it sounds as though you are a great slave by noticing her change of habits as they hide things well :(

Can only be a good thing - I had to make poop soup for my boy from his brother, they get vital nutrients from this and keeps their gut flora balanced. The best probiotic and free too ;)

Have you tried her with some grass and dandelion leaves (wash well, shake excess water off for extra fluid intake) I spent a fortune on goodies for my poorly piggy and my OH picked handfuls of fresh grass etc. daily and he nibbled that (the piggy not my OH :{) - all free too.
 
GPS i too think it's good that she's eating the others poops........
Have you weighed her? regular weighing shows you their pattern, most piggies weights tend to go up and down weekly........ big losses are a must for the vets!
Keep an eye on her love piggies can hide sickness very well :{
 
This has happened in the past with one of my piggies.. she'd had a GA and her teeth checked after a sudden drop in weight and trouble eating (making exaggerated mouth movements then dropping food).. she went through a spell of eating other piggies dropping, almost as though she was using their nutritional value to help boost her gut flora to get her eating properly again.. sounds like you piggie knows what she's doing;)
You might want to add pro-biotics to her water to help :)
