I have had my guinea pigs for 3 weeks, got them from pets at home but soon after I got them Soot who is 23 weeks old developed a URI. He's been on baytril for a week now and does seem better (he's been eating and drinking fine throughout). I went back to the vets yesterday and they have prescribed another week of Baytril so I was just wondering if its normal it to take 2 weeks of antibiotics to clear up URIs?

to be honest, it usually takes alot longer and with a different antibiotic. baytril isn't the best choice for respiratory infections, however most regular vets use it first because it is the only licensed one for guinea pigs. regular vets will only have minimal training aswell. an exotics vet (specialist trained in guinea pigs), or a piggy-savvy vet (a regular vet with a special interest or extra training in guinea pigs) will have access to a much wider range of treatments so i would recommend seeing one for the very best treatment. there is a vet locator at the top of the page to help.
you should also have been given an anti-inflammatory aswell to bring down the swelling usually associated with respiratory infections.
they're a tricky condition sometimes. they can appear to go but then 'come back' - this is usually because they never truly went and this is usually because the medication wasn't the best, or the length of the course wasn't long enough.
it's good your piggy is tolerating the baytril well. it can cause some tummy issues and loss of appetite so if you wanted to, then you can give a probiotic 1-2hrs after the baytril. something like avipro plus, a pinch in 1ml water.

Yes, it can take longer or it may even need a stronger antibiotic depending on the severity of the symptoms/congestion of the lungs. What is his weight and the concentration and dosage of the baytril?

The vet weighed him but i can't really remember what he said (i think is was around 0.44kg) but he's on 0.26mls twice a day of 2.5%. I've started him on a probiotic as well even though his stomach has been fine so far I was going to take him to an exotic vet but as i got them from pets at home they are paying for treatment atm so i just need some advice really. They do seem pretty good with guinea pigs so far but i couls be wrong also

they should (and have with lots of people who have posted with a similar story over the years on here) still pay wherever you take him as they sold you a poorly pet. so i would personally go to the better vets. it just makes sense to see the best one from the start. especially with something like respiratory problems. and i say this from experience unfortunately. good luck
Yeah i spoke to the manager today and he said they would, they have just given him metacalm as well so will see how he goes over next day or 2 and then go and see new vet. He hasn't lost any weight since last week is a good thing
